preparing for sorority recruitment
by: first yearHow do you get into a very good house here if you went to a northern virginia public school? A lot of you are probably reading this rolling your eyes, but bear with me: I know that at many universities, there's kind of a caste system that dictates who has mixers with whom, who talks to whom, and how often. It can work to chapters' advantage or disadvantage. At UVA, are decisions made during recruitment about connections and family, or about looks-grades-sociability? I just don't want to be written off by great houses because I went to a public high school. Surprise, surprise...I'm not middle class. And I definitely don't really want to pledge where girls from my school have. I don't want to be stuck based on something so arbitrary. Any advice? How much do alumni recommendation letters from strong southern chapters help?

I fear my school will put me at a disadvantage, despite any other qualities I have. I chose to go there anyway for the quality of education/proximity to home thinking I could start anew in college...it's not like I wanted to spend the day driving across the river when I could get the same quality of education closer to home. In hindsight, I realized that neither my school nor peers placed any value on networking or things of that sort.
I'm a bit anxious about this now. I thought my family (not from VA at all)/interests/background/connections/sports/sociability/ove rall type would help. I go to a decent public school in a suburb, but if that's the only factor you look at, I feel like I'm screwed...it's in NOVA. NOVA…soccer mom-minivan-middle management capital of the mid atlantic. How damning is that?
When you consider someone's school as a factor, how do you do it? Do you guys cut PNMs based on where they went to school? Would it be possible for me to omit the name of my school on that online greek application thing? Tell me there is hope for me at a highly respected, more traditional sorority here. I'm not exactly bad looking either.

Pi Phis are not a top house, but coming from oos you probably can't get a top house anyway. Pi Phi is a good mid-level house that you won't be super embarrassed about joining. There are others in this category too if you don't get Pi Phi. I'd recommend you try Chi O, KD, Gamma Phi, or Zeta if you don't get Pi Phi.

Sometimes you might want to include your SAT score on the application. This would allow you to make a more concrete case for the quality of your old high school. Every little bit helps in your case. Good luck!
