Most sororities have over 100 members, but the number fluctuates based on how many 4th years leave (many drop out 4th year since they don't do much with the sorority and it's not worth the money) - that determines how many girls they will need in their pledge class, along with how many girls graduated the year before, and how many girls were in their pledge class the year before too. An average amount is between 30-40 girls per pledge class.

Is there a minimum quota for the pledge class? I mean, what if a sorority only gets 25 new pledges, for example? And if a 4th year drops out, is that the same as deactivating?

Usually there's a minimum quota, but it varies every year and is set by nationals. 4th years either drop out, but many do emergency alumni status, that way they're still a part of the sorority and don't have to pay anything, although they can't go to sorority events. If a sorority gets 25 pledges when they needed to get more, then the next year they will have to increase the number of pledges even more for the amount of pledges they need. If this keeps up for many years, the sorority may go bankrupt. It's rare, but possible. Usually if sororities don't fill a pledge class by a large amount it means that they aren't very desirable.

There is a lot of useful information about quotas, snap bids (used by a chapter who didn't get their full quota of bids through the formal rush/prefs/bid list process), & the recruitment process in general. You have to look thru the material, but there are some very knowledgeable Greek women online there who will de-mystify the process to those of you who aren't familiar with it. The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) governs recruitment for member Greek organizations and establishes the ground rules in an effort to make the Greek experience positive. NPC has its roots in an 1891 convention in Boston with representatives from KAT, KKG, AP, DG, DDD, GPB, & PBP-those ladies wrestled with the same issues as today!

Phi Mu was at UVa at one point?

The rankings on the left are more or less accurate IMO. I might switch #10, 11, & 12, but that's about it.

Wow, I didn't know that about PM. I know ΑΟΠ used to have a chapter at UVa, Chi Beta (and if it was still around, I'd be a legacy...well, through an aunt, does that count as a legacy?).
