Your rush will be just fine if you keep an open mind and give the sororities that ask you back a chance instead of focusing on the ones that didn't, and you WILL experience being dropped. Don't take it personally, it doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you or that you weren't liked or not deemed good enough. Each sorority is only allowed to invite back a certain percentage of the pnm's each round, and it's far better to be released earlier in the process than later so you can concentrate on the houses that WANT you.

This site is terrible and presents the worst distorted perceptions of greek life. Don't let anonymous internet strangers influence your rush with their own agendas, especially the silly first year frat boys who flood this site. Joining certain houses is not a golden ticket, nor is it social suicide. Rush is in person for a reason, sorority membership is lived in real life, get off this stupid site and make up your own damn mind.

thanks a lot! i’m def keeping an open mind and trying not to focus on a couple “desirable sororities” so i’m being hopeful that it’ll all work out

Do you know anyone in sororities at UVA? That can help as a transfer. Even if you don't you will do fine if you keep an open mind! GL!

A few of my sophomore friends are in one already, so they’re def helpful but I also don’t want to be reliant on them to get me into the one they’re in and instead focus on finding one that’s right for me!

Honey, you are dead wrong about not relying on your friends, so let me try to explain. Rush is competitive and so many pnm's are just as pretty, accomplished, personable and social as the next, so personal connections are EVERYTHING. Any pre-existing relationships can make or break your rush. Please read that last sentence again. This is not a blind process that starts on the first day of rush.

For the sororities, there is a fine line between who to keep for the next round and who to release, and so many awesome pnm's fall through the cracks just for numbers sake because they don't stand out from the other awesome pnm's in some way. Leverage any advantage you may have by letting your friends know you are interested in their sorority so they can speak for you and at least get you on their sorority's radar. Your friends can't read your mind, you have to tell them, and if you don't say it to them they will assume you are not enthusiastic about their house. Hopefully your friends will make sure not to be the ones rushing you so you can meet as many other members as you can. Membership selection is a chapter decision and you do need as many advocates as possible to get to pref. If you aren't a good fit it won't happen, but at least give yourself your best chance.

oh okay, i def have let them know i like their sororities but i just didn’t want to come off as desperate, but ill make it more clear. i was just more or less curious about how the process differs for sophomores and if its a lot harder

Its def harder for second years but its hard for first years too - it a stressful process. Agree its good to let your friends know you're interested in their sorority and I suggest reiterating your interest to them as you get further into the process. Later rounds can be tough.

Good luck! ❤️

There are separate quotas for upperclassmen and freshmen, therefore you will not be competing with freshmen for spots. You will be considered in a different pool of pnm's. This is a definite advantage.
