Recruitment observations, srat edition
by: Coach C
Here's some advice if you're going through sorority recruitment this spring. This is based on my own experience and the observations I've had on the other side of the process.
It definitely helps if you know people in a
house but it's not a guarantee you will get a bid. One person only carries so much weight, even if they're advocating for you. More positive connections can increase your chances But think of it as an advantage not a guarantee.
Between now and the start of recruitment, do some practicing of what you'll say, how to keep up a conversation, how to look interested and engaged. TikTok and YouTube have plenty of examples. If this feels and seems fake to you, you're right, it is a bit. But PNMs who prepare tend to do better than those who go in cold.
99% of PNMs will get cut from one or more houses. Even houses that you had great conversations with, and felt a connection to, may drop you. This usually NOT because you didn't connect or that you weren't liked. It's because the system for cuts is basically a ranking system, and more selective houses fill up the number of spots for parties more quickly. They might've really wanted to bring you back but they filled up their list before they got to you. It happens to a lot of really great PNMs, especially for the most selective houses.
Listen to your gut and don't share more than it's necessary with your rush group, roommates, friends who are also going through recruitment. Where are you got back and where you didn't is your business. There's always someone who sounds like they're getting every single house back. Try to ignore other people's experiences and just focus on your own process.
If you have two houses for Pref it's most likely you'll get your top choice but it's not a guarantee. You're more likely to get a bid somewhere if you rank both houses. It's up to you to decide if you could see yourself at one or both.
This is what I've seen and experienced, and other people may have different observations. GL!

Everything in your post is correct except for prefs. If you rank both houses you are guaranteed a bid to one of them, not "more likely to," but guaranteed, and more likely to get your first choice, but no promises there, you could end up with your second.
If you have two pref houses and only rank one and you are not high enough to match with them then you are out of the process and not getting a bid. Ranking only one of your pref houses does NOT give you an advantage with that house. Your rankings of the houses have no effect whatsoever on how the houses rank you, and it's the houses' ranks that drive the process. If you absolutely would not accept a bid from your second choice no matter what then leave them off your card and accept the possibility that you could go bidless.
If you only have one house at pref and put it on your card you are getting that bid and will have an easy night.

True. Also don't talk about other sororities during rounds at any house. The actives aren't supposed to ask you, it's a huge rush infraction for them, but someone might go there anyway so be totally neutral about other houses. Tell a chapter when you really like them, but mentioning others is a no-no for you.
