Greek "Wealth" at UVA

by:

At UVA, how "rich" are the top, mid, and low fraternities? Is there a ranking, or general description you can give that can describe their wealth? Does having wealth and connections matter for rush, and how do frats sniff this out?

I'm just concerned as I've been reading about many of the frats at UVA on this post and just don't know where I stand relative to the greek population. Not poor by any means but my parents aren't F500 CEOs if you catch my drift.

Everyone in greeklife is relatively well off because dues are expensive. Top frats tend to be wealthier but with that being said, I know plenty of guys in frats all over the spectrum whose parents don’t pay their dues and arent crazy well off as well as guys who are just ridiculously loaded and don’t pay a cent of dues. Overall though, I wouldn’t let money stop you from rushing or joining a frat - if a frat wont work with you to make your financial situation work then that’s not a frat I would ever consider joining.

Great answer, and thank you. I will probably rush some of the better frats if this is true.

UVa students never always use the word "fraternity", in its' complete form. We also say "First Year", "Second Year" and so forth. "Grounds" is used for what others would call a campus. If someone uses terms other than these, don't assume they attended or graduated from Virginia.

can't say but there are extremely wealthy kids and poor kids in every frat. The exception are the top 3 frats where all of them went to private high schools. Surprisingly though there are some kids in the mid-low tier frats that are very very wealthy(50million net worth). so yeah a mixed bag for sure

It's not about the actual money, it's about who already knows you, or about you, from the circles you and your parents are in. Anyone is more likely to get a bid from a house where members already know him. But all frats are also looking for unknowns they click with during rush. Be yourself and confident that your personality and interests are enough to get a bid.
