Social Darwinism, the free market, and UVA Rush

by: Kenneth Elzinga

Hey guys, I’ve been thinking abt what’s gonna happen in the coming weeks and here are my two cents.

Which frat/srat you join does, in fact, define you and your social value at UVA. Think of rush selection as as an application of Adam Smith’s invisible hand where Greek life forces will determine your order on the stratum of UVA’s food chain. For example, I landed at Elmo and it has been a great and a proper reflection of my character and value. This landing could’ve been predicted by where I went to high school, my extra curriculars, and who my high school girlfriend was and looked like. Carry on.

Tbh, totally agree. You may be kidding, but Pika's inclusion in secret societies has maximized our EV (expected value for those who don't have aspirations). The SigChi kids understand these market principles, but don't want to admit it. Keynes was wrong. Social cache will always be capped due to the stickiness of the inputs: quality of girls, number of feeder high schools etc

Thanks for the response, blind fiji egg guy.

In finding refutations of this social theory I’ve sought to analyze the temporality of the social order determined by rush.

Being in Elmo, is being “on top” a short term or long term phenomena? In answering this question we seek the average income of Elmo alumni (adjusted for inflation and financial accommodations purchased by parents) vs. that of the mean student.

Assumptions:
- everyone studied a finance or economics
- job interests: finance or consulting

Other specifications of on top:
The projected beauty of my future wife versus the mean (discounted for aging over time). And vaguely, perhaps a comparison of power?

Hypothesis: success in rush has long term implications that will carve the path for the rest of your life. Carry on.
