How do snap bids work?

by:

I know they can be given if a chapter doesn't reach their quota, but when would that happen? and does a PNM express any interest to any of the chapters that have released them (like through their Pi Chi maybe?) or the chapters just look back at who they released and ask a few girls they liked?

The latter, the chapters will reach out to anyone they liked who dropped out. It’s quite rare so don’t count on it.

Aphi gave out 2 snap bids last year so it isn’t totally unlikely

Sororities may not have more snap bids outstanding than spaces left to fill quota. Potential new members must respond to snap bids within 2 hours. The snap bid period will extend from noon until 5 pm on Bid Day. After 5 pm, all chapters must end the snap bid process

Snap bids are offered as soon after bid matching as is practical in the morning and are all completed before 5:00 on bid day. If you are extended a snap you will have 2 hours to accept. Snap bids are bids like any other and you will go to your new house to accept with everyone else who opens her bid on bid day. There is no way to express interest in a snap, you will just have to hope that a house who fell short of quota liked you enough to want to extend you one. No, your Pi Chi can't tell a sorority that you want a snap.

To do snap bids -do the sororities get a list of names of girls who are out of the running, so they can look down the list and see if any names jump out at them, as being someone they liked but was released? They have met so many people, just wondering how they recall who they liked who might not be getting a bid from another chapter

Yes. After the MRABA cards are signed the houses eligible to snap receive a comprehensive list of pnm's who started rush but didn't finish.

If I get a snap instead of a regular bid will people know?

By: Snap
by: SNAP

Only if you tell people. But everyone is far too concerned and emotionally caught up with their own experience to worry about or judge someone else, which includes other pnm's, sorority actives, and your new member class. A snap is a bid like any other and you will go with your new member class to bid day and no one has to know. No stigma in getting a snap bid.

Any predictions about which houses might come in under quota and by how many?

By: predictions
by: No

Ugh so many questions. Snap bids do not happen often and are usually only a couple of girls . Please stop focusing on this aspect.

supposedly there were pretty deep cuts in the various rounds so the numbers might fall shorter than expected

By: maybe
by: nope

Quota is not a predetermined number so there is no way to fall short of it, no matter how deep the cuts are. Quota is not determined until after pref when every pnm has signed her card. It's a formula: pnm's signing cards divided by the number of sororities = Quota. More pnm's signing cards = higher quota, less pnm's signing cards = lower quota.

Stop counting on getting a snap bid. The rush system and release figures at each round, including pref, make sure that the event of a house not reaching quota has a low probability. There would only be a handful of snaps offered among all combined houses, if any. No one can possibly predict who or how many, and anything you would hear on this site is nothing to go on.

So with all of this talk of snap bids, any one get one?

Snaps happen because it's very seldom that chapters make quota within their first bid list. What happens is that as PNMs that are on their first bid list match to their other preference at their first choice selection(ie this chapter is their #2 choice), then that PNM is removed from the chapter's list and the next PNM moves onto the list. Once the chapter has matched quota, then they start looking at the 2nd choice of the remaining PNMs that attended the chapter's preference and are somewhere on their bid list

This is not true at all. Once a chapter has reached quota they are done. There is not a 1st bid list and a 2nd bid list, there is just one ranked list fed into the computer to bid match. No chapter who reaches quota can snap bid. What you are describing are terms left over from a very old system before RFM and Quota Additions.

What do these numbers mean? Is this the number they get to go over quota so everyone that preffed two houses gets a bid?

by: yes

these are quota additions, which is the amount the house was allowed to take over quota to ensure everyone gets a bid.

You really can't judge anything based on this, because the higher ranked houses (Kappa, Theta, DDD etc) all have a much smaller list they are working with than the others that traditionally don't have as high a percentage of high PNM rankings because they cut more heavily early on. So it's only natural that they got the girls they wanted and didn't have to go over quota as the group they had was pretty much assured to go to those houses. You can't read anything into this statistic.

This is last years list of quota additions, looks suspiciously similar:

DDD +2
DG +6
DZ +4
GPB +7
KAT +2
KD +6
KKG +0
PBP +3
SK +4
SSS +5
ZTA +3
...but again all this is is the number of extra people they took over quota in order to ensure everyone got a bid.

Just to explain this more, if a middle tier chapter does significantly better than in previous years, they are likely to make quota plus because their bid list is longer than it needed to be. Simply put, large numbers of QAs are the result of a chapter doing better than expected per RFM.

so adding this up about 875 girls got bids…

How many started rush?

Can someone please clarify the Snap Bidding process? I thought Snap Bids are only given out up until the Bid Day activities at 3? Can a group give a Snap Bid out to someone as long as she hasn't opened her Bid Card?
I also thought that you can only SB up to Quota. Is snap bidding now over?

I have a contact on the ISC who told me that the ISC is setting a higher total this year and ALL except 1 sorority are doing COB's. I'm sure many have already started, but this should give y'all hope. I've heard that telling the ISC that you are interested in COB can help and you should definitely contact anyone you know in the sororities you're interested in. Good luck!

Wait, so I got my second choice on bid day and now I find out my first choice is doing COB? My pi chi told my not to suicide and now I wish I had. I feel like I got bad advice. Do I have any options?

I think your only option if you quit is to wait for formal next year. I'm sorry if things didn't work out the way you hoped. I think it would be hard to follow the rules but not end up where you wanted and then see girls who quit get those spots. It's an imperfect system for sure. Good luck!

if you haven't heard by now you didn't get one. It can only go to someone who dropped out of the process and didn't pref anyone yesterday.
