Some of the hottest takes probably

by:

I'm just gonna be honest: UVA has too many frats and too little srats. Bring back SDT and Phi Mu and get rid of these frats that are dying out because they can't recruit well. Frat PCs should also be bigger than they are but that'd only be possible with some of these irrelevant frats being dissolved.

maybe frats are getting smaller because UVA is discriminating against male applicants. So the pool is getting smaller

frats are always smaller than sororities, at every school. there are always more frats than sororities for the same reason. and bringing in new sororities (or fraternities, for that matter) doesn’t solve anything: every new greek organization starts out more “bottom tier” and unfortunately people at UVA are too accustomed to being “top” of everything they’ve done that they drop rush.

ISC/ISC can mitigate this by encouraging more cohesive greek events—for example, lots of schools do things like a dance marathon—that showcase a strong greek community versus elevating a few chapters. but no, the reason SDT failed was because there simply weren’t enough girls willing to join greek life as a whole and instead got focused on “top tier”. until the bottom 3 chapters do consistently well and there are an excess of women joining, then it’s gonna stay the same

By: no
by: Ok

Don't think that the last paragraph is true because the "bottom" srats are getting good numbers. There was just something about SDT that had them failing over and over

By: Ok
Report
by: @Ok

that’s fair. SDT also didn’t have a house which really hurt them. regardless, bringing them or Phi Mu back doesn’t solve anything because 50% of PNMs drop out of rush here—which is a major red flag for any nationals considering colonizing—and the general attitude of PNMs rushing for status rather than sisterhood or Greek Life opportunities. a new srat would not do well numbers-wise. if more PNMs stayed in rush and pledge classes got excessively large (like minimum 80 across all srats) consistently, then there would be room

"Greek Life opportunities"

Mixing with ATO, ASig and SERP aren't great opportunities

not everything is about mixers. opportunities in greek life refers to leadership, scholarships, alumni networking, etc. but if you’re joining greek life for mixers then it’s pretty obvious why it didn’t work out for you

This is it “ there simply weren’t enough girls willing to join greek life as a whole and instead got focused on “top tier”.”

honestly “bottom” sororities aren’t doing that well, uva’s retention for pnms is awful because pmms care way more about rankings than actually making a connection with the houses that invite them back. At other schools, drop rates are way lower and it’s not because bottom sororities here are any different. it just sucks for those sororities who put in so much work just like all the others to make pnms feel welcome and love their sisterhood

Maybe "bottom" srats at other schools offer a better experience, so fewer PNMs drop?

pnms don’t know what experience “bottom sororities” at uva will give them because they aren’t willing to test out being a new mem. you met like 5/150 people, you don’t know what they’re like. and the “bottom sororities” now were doing fine before sdt left, but since they now have the stigma of being “bottom” pnms don’t want them. They offer great experiences, the only thing that has changed is their relative ranking and pnms caring so much about tiers

the real issue is that ISC and IFC don’t do enough to highlight the various opportunities in joining greek life or to build a strong community of greek life as a whole. other schools have mixers between multiple srats and frats at once, philanthropy events on behalf of the entire greek community, big networking galas, etc. they simply do not put any effort into actually making the greek community stronger

Honestly, if there was more mixing between "tiers" all sororities would be doing great (and frats probably). I believe they are all making quota so to say there is room for another sorority is not currently true. There is so much emphasis on who everyone mixes with and the girls feel like if they are "bottom tier" they are just going to meet a bunch of losers, which is NOT true. We are at UVA people, there are no "losers" here. Everyone is accomplished and successful in their own right.

Like a kind of affirmative action or quota system for what orgs you have to socialize with?

Who would control that?

it’s true too, don’t want to name which orgs for privacy but ik people in lower mid frats and srats who dated people in the top 3 frats/srats and their friends literally admitted they thought their frat/srar were fun and goodlooking but had to keep up appearances

We would probably have more srats too if girls were not so petty and obsessed with rankings/ put down other srats. Girls shouldn’t feel bad because they got bids to certain houses and not others. Let’s stop being so mean to other girls and maybe new sororities and will survive.

It's not a UVA problem. Ranking exists at every school. There's a whole site dedicated to it :)

by: mmm

it is a problem at uva. other schools might have rankings but usually it only matters for the top 2/3 and everyone else is pretty unbothered by it, hence why every sorority at those schools does well. national orgs don’t want to come to uva because new sororities almost always do poorly because uva always has someone on the chopping block. Adding a new sorority wont change the girls at uva or in greeklife either…

UVA student are so obsessed with looking cool or being better then everyone else they are choking sororities out because if you’re not in a top tier then other girls make it seem like something is wrong with you. You can have a great time in a bottom sorority and love it only takes so much of everyone else telling you your sorority sucks until you drop it. All girls in Greek life need to support other girls in Greek life!!!!

When they APhi first came to UVA, they waited a few years and then kicked out all of the sisters because they didn't think they were "on brand." Then they restarted with APhi nationals conducting rush and offering bids. (The original sisters hadn't even graduated yet.) You can google the story
