determinants of tier
by: Curious
What exactly determines tiers? I keep looking at these lists but haven’t really been able to figure out what elements of each reflect tier. I’d assume it’s a combination of things but after being a few days into Rush and reading some of these discussions, it seems like these rankings are fairly arbitrary (looks, sociability, and philanthropy considered).
Also, what are the social implications of being in a lower tier sorority at uva?

It is objective like the rankings for colleges. I’m sure some would consider uva the top public university and some would rank cal or Michigan higher.
It is objective for the most part but popularity is what determines ranks. Also, ranking never really changes much. The bottom really stays the bottom and mid and top keep their places. Even my mom that graduated decades ago is able to know tiers still. They really don’t change. Most rank is how fratty or sororityty you are and how cool you are. Just like their were cool kids in high school

As you have probably seen from rush so far there is not much of a difference in the house qualities and the sizes of the sororities. I am in what would be deemed “lower tier” and we have the same date functions (ex. Parents formal, alumni date function and formal) and we hold them at the same venues. The only real difference is what parties and mixers you get invited to. Which really doesn’t matter because every group has mixers and parties and most of the frat guys look and act the same in most frats. Additionally, I believe there is a stronger sisterhood component in mid/lower levels because we base rankings on a mix of things including: if you match our values and your personality. Where most top tiers judge in superficial qualities.

Contrary to popular belief, tier is actually determined on the 6th of July every year. Each sorority competes in an Olympic Games-style tournament that involves discus, sprinting, chariot racing, etc....
Currently, Pi Phi is being investigated for doping-related charges, while DG claims to be on the forefront of developing the next Michael Phelps
Any other criteria is clearly a lie

Absolutely true. And if anyone wants to judge you for what tier your frat/srat is considered they aren’t worthy of your time.
