These are rush stats from two years ago. These numbers came directly from UVA: Recruitment began with 1,020 Potential New Member registrants. Prior to the start of the first round, 42 women left the process (either did not show up or withdrew before starting recruitment). The number of PNMs who thus began the process was 978. Ultimately, 356 women voluntarily withdrew, did not receive a bid, or were released at some point during the process. 622 women received bids, the vast majority of whom received their first choice.(???, not sure about that...) So.... at UVA, 36.4 percent were cut out of rush or left the process. Two years ago, the national average was 17% and the SEC schools were all under 10%.

I think that this year's numbers will be very similar...

And they say we don’t need more sororities. Phi Mu where are you when I need you?

By: Ha
by: ^

What do you imagine Phi Mu is going to do that will make a difference? They will be the same UVA girls that are in every other house. Same goes for any other new sorority. Another house will not bring in some magic change of personnel. The problem is too many pnm's who view sororities as some sort of caste system and think they are too good for so many of our wonderful sororities. "I'm a top tier girl. I have always been a top tier girl and was raised as one. I got into UVA so that proves how top tier I am. I will not associate with anything that is not labeled as top top top!" This is your first taste of grown up life and you not getting what you want so you think something's wrong with the school or the sororities. Time to get realistic about the world and grow up a bit.

I think it’s less of the “I’m top tier” mindset, but more of girls get left with 2 houses they never liked by the last couple days & it’s clear that their choices (cuts) didn’t matter. It’s dumb that the whole idea is to “find your home” but in the end your choices don’t actually matter at all. You can’t blame girls for dropping when they only have one or two options left that they never liked in the first place.

If you can only get into certain parties by joining a top-tier, what's the point of joining a middle tier?

Y’all are highlighting the whole issue. Pnms decide they never like certain houses from the start, i.e. never give them a chance. Girls don’t get dropped by the process, they drop out because they aren’t willing to give the ones who actually invite them back another thought. And lots regret it and end up going through the process second year with an open mind, but if they’d had it from the start they could’ve saved a lot of time/energy

Why can’t UVA have more sororities? Is it that no one has bothered to start a chapter, or that UVA won’t allow it? There are loads of frats, why can’t us girls have more houses?

By: No more?

It's complicated to bring a new NPC (Panhellenic) chapter to campus.

First, the ISC would have to vote on whether a new sorority is needed.

If they voted yes, then all of the NPC sororities not on campus would be notified that the campus is "open for extension."

Any NPC sorority that wanted to throw its hat in the ring would then apply for the chance to come to campus and make a sales pitch.

Then the ISC would vote on the sorority they think would be the best fit based on their sales pitch.

Why is UVA rush so inefficient compared to the rest of the country or even the SEC?

By: y
by: ???

How is it "inefficient?" The same NPC rules govern recruitment at every single other campus.

Sororities need to break free from the chains that bind them. Get smart, ladies.

No new sorority is coming to UVA until SDT re-establishes and becomes sustainable for more than a few years. Basically ISC and FSL are blocking others while holding that spot for SDT until all of the former SDT's graduate so they can recolonize without any reputational issues. Only after they get back and successful, then a new sorority can be added.

by: SDT

SDT needs to leave for a few years. Bring Phi Mu back. Phi Mu has a much better national reputation than SDT. I think it would do well.

@omega

I hope that all the sororitys will share your enthusiasm and support SDT when they recolonize! They will have to have a stellar recolonization rush or they will be back in the same position they were in before.
Additionally, SDT is one of the smaller/newer Nationals having only 65,000 members, collegiate and alumni; whereas the older Nationals have between 200,000 and 300,000 members. I think that girls take information like that into consideration when choosing a Sorority.
I am in no way trying to be negative just speculating here...

ISC and Dean Groves decides when to open for new colonization / recolonization. I'm pretty involved and to tell you the truth I don't see that happening as long as the lower houses are disrespected so much here. Their first priority is to get all the chapters doing well then invite in another group. it's not going to happen with the stuff I read on here. No university wants a group of mean girls deciding who is welcome.

I don’t think GPB, SSS or SDT will ever do well. It would be better to bring in some others and just accept that those 3 will be marginal.

Gamma Phi and tri sig actually do pretty well here. They’ve consistently been meeting quota... what happened to Sig Delt was unfortunate but after a few years they can totally come back and be revived

Tri sig is still searching for an identity, their strongest pc is graduating this year so we’ll see what happens. SDT? Time will tell. GPB seems to enjoy their quirky reputation. I just think there is a place for Phi Mu back on grounds.

Top tiers are pretty satisfied with the status quo because it reinforces the hierarchy. Middle tiers like it that other houses struggle because it makes them feel superior, they are invested in maintaining the marginal status of lower tiers. Any new sorority would challenge the mid-tiers, so the middle tier houses vote in the ISC against expansion.

If the new sorority were in fact a re-founded sorority with alumni and maybe a house (like Phi Mu), then they would threaten the top tier too eventually.

From their website, SDT is on track "to recolonize following formal ISC recruitment in January 2019. The colony will be reclaiming their chapter house on the second floor of GrandMarc."

If you didn't get a bid, do you get your registration money back?? 400 PNMs who didn't join X $50 fees = $2,000 for what?

By: bank
by: Umm

400 x 50 = $20,000. Not $2,000. Dean Groves is having a party.
