Jw how formal we're meant to dress for the open houses, is it a blazer jacket/tie sort of event or more informal?

Depends on the houses you are especially interested in.

My coach had a van where I could change between houses so I didn't look awkward

It is a black tie event. There are several places in barracks where you can rent tuxedos. Plz don’t come underdressed, it upsets the brothers.
