new sororities

by: hope

I know it’s early but does anyone know if any new sorority chapters are supposed to come in the fall for informal rush for PNM's who are second year and above?

Would a new colony of Phi Mu or whatever be any different, better, and/or higher ranked than the other newer houses?

Every new house starts at the bottom and has to move their way up over time. So even if one of the sororities y’all are begging for comes, it’ll be bottom tier your first couple years. If you think you’re too good for the sororities we already have, is that really what you want?

Not sure that’s true. Phi Mu has a strong national presence and could easily be mid-tier with the right girls. I say go for it!

APhi was forced to leave uva and then come back later in the early 2000’s. When they came back they were bottom despite their national presence and decent pc (I know all this because my sister was here at the time). Obviously over time they were able to work their way up, but it’s just an unfortunate fact that new sororities usually start at the bottom.

How do we get the process started? Or does the Phi Mu national office have to initiate things with ISC? Anyone know?

NPC has a specific procedure for adding a new sorority to any campus. First ISC has to decide that there is room for a new sorority in the first place. This involves all the sororities deciding for it to happen. The major reason for adding a new sorority is when new member classes across the board are getting too big. That isn't the case here, as well as sororities consistently not making quota (big ol' red flag for expansion.) Anyway, if expansion were needed and voted to be a go, the next step is an invitation for interest extended to all NPC sororities that are not already at UVA. The ones who are interested will respond and send all kinds of info on themselves for ISC and existing sororities to review. Then, the three sororities deemed best fit would be asked to come and present. One of those would be chosen to colonize in the next year or two. That's how it happens. Disgruntled pnm's thinking that bringing on XYZ sorority will make them happy will not be given the time of day y'all.

I would say a 36% drop rate would mean that are girls who want more choices. I thought all sororitys made quota, who didn’t?

A new sorority comes onto a campus by getting local reps in place to form a colony, usually very young alumni from nearby schools. They start by participating in the first day only of formal recruitment, making presentations to pnm's. Then they drop out of the picture until formal is over and then start having informal events and interviews. Interviews are key because these reps are choosing the leaders of their new chapter. Not every girl will be invited to form the colony. They have to be selective and not go for numbers at first. The process goes on for several weeks until they have their group together and then do some kind of combination pref/bidding ceremony. Then they have their colony. This class goes through new member training for several weeks, the colony leadership is selected, the new members are initiated, and voila, there is a new chapter on campus. The new chapter would then participate fully in all ISC events, including formal recruitment. Next step is to secure a house, which depends heavily on regional alumnae support. A new chapter is a hell of a lot of work, requiring a very, very dedicated core group of colonizing members. If you think it's just about getting some new sorority letters slapped up and then getting the party started, you couldn't be more mistaken.

Sounds like the chick who lived in the tri sig house when they rebooted. She was a nightmare, most of the girls hated her.

@expansion

If you were actually at UVA, you would know that Phi Mu already has a house here.

If you could actually read for comprehension, the explanation contains no mention of Phi Mu coming on, it is about the actual process that would have to happen. Because someone asked. There are no guarantees that Phi Mu would be the one to come on.

Phi Mu would have to want to return and invest lots of resources into making a go of it. The university would allow a number of sororities to present their cases to come to UVA, and part of a persuasive case is having a pretty deep bench of alumnae willing to volunteer with the chapter. Schools open for expansion when chapters are too big--not when the girls don't like the chapters offered. That's just not how it works. Phi Mu is a great sorority--just like all the nationals already on grounds. Sororities are big business and their decisions to open chapters are business decisions. Sorry this probably isn't exactly what you want to hear. I encourage you to join a chapter already here if you want to be part of greek life. It helped me to realize that no sorority was perfect. I wish you the best.

Kinda have to laugh at the PNM's saying they need more choices from UVA. What do you need? A new mix of girls who attend the school? All houses are made up of current UVA girls. If you drop halfway through rush because you don't like your choices, then you don't like your classmates? Maybe you should attend another school then. I get that you want to find where you fit in, which means you may not be comfortable at every single house, and sometimes getting cut prematurely from your favorites prevents this- but this is the system everywhere and maybe you just really need to be more patient in your search. I have checked out the pledge classes of most of our sororitys- especially the so called mid and lower tiers and I am seeing a mix of fun/ pretty/and really happy girls in every shot of every house. Not sure what the problem is.
