by:

I'm just wondering what the advantages and disadvantages are, I'm hearing a lot of different things.

Thoughts? Advice?

Pro: you won’t be getting a bid from the houses you don’t like
Con: you may end up with nothing

Personally I’d recommend NOT suicide bidding because you can always choose not to accept the bid later or drop later. I have friends that suicide bidded and regretted it.

Don't I have to accept the bid on Bid Day?

I don’t think that you actually have it. Even if you do accept it and then decide to drop soon after the only penalty is that you can’t do informal which isn’t a huge deal

It's complicated and kinda depends on your situation. Your pi chi will tell you not to but I know a lot of girls who did and were glad they did. Some got snap bids from sororities they liked on bid day, others got bids through COB and others waited for informal and were happy they waited.

Between cross rushing and the computer matching algorithm, strange things happen. Top and middle tiers don't make quota and hand out snap bids. It's crazy. I think if you suicide but don't match you're able to get snap bids.

Snap bids are kinda rare

I think "yep" meant cross matching.
Please talk to your Pi Chi to get the most accurate information, don't take advice from someone who isnt 100% sure of what she is telling you.
Per NPC guidelines, signing your Bid Card is a contract. If you get a bid and you change your mind, and "don't accept the bid" you have to wait 365 calendar days to accept a bid from another sorority. You are not eligible for COB, Continuous Open Bidding, for an entire year, nor are you eligible for Informal Recruitment in the Fall. So, yes, turning down a bid is serious business.
Again, please talk to your Pi Chi to run through the various scenarios of what will happen if you "Suicide" and don't match.
Good luck!

Can you accept a bid and then choose to drop the house before initiation with no consequences?

the only "consequence" is that you can't participate in informal in the fall. Also, it makes everything a little awkward

Question--the same rules apply as for not accepting a bid. You have to wait one calendar year to join another NPC sorority. At this point, girls are usually pretty conflicted about the sorority experience and because of the time issues involved never end up joining another sorority. Once you are initated, you, of course, may never join another sorority.

Definitely take those consequences seriously, but not that many chapters COB or do informal. You might not be giving that much up by accepting a bid somewhere you aren’t sure about and then trying it out. If you don’t love it, just drop before initiation

I strongly encourage PNMs not to suicide bid. Putting two chapters down is the only way to recommend that you will get a bid on bid day. Do not rely on snap bids. They are so rare. If a sorority does give a snap bid, it’s usually only one or two. And to get a snap bid, you need to be the next person on their bid list or have very close friends in the chapter. Yes, you cannot participate in informal if you accept a bid, but you never know which chapters will be participating in informal anyways. It’s always a toss-up. COBs are also not common to upper tier sororities. It is more difficult to join a sorority as a second year as well. Bid day for everyone is very fun, and it is worth it to try out a sorority that you are not sure about. You may find yourself really liking it. Good luck!

Suicide bidding is a very bad idea. You could be left extremely disappointed

Then why do so many girls do it if it's such a bad idea? I think it would be way worse to end up in a sorority you don't like...

You can always drop later tho! No one is forcing you to spend 4 years in it. I have sooo many friends who were gonna drop but gave their sororities a chance and ended up loving them

Nothing worse than opening a bid card to a sorority you have no interest in joining.
