what do sororities look for?
by: pnm2021I was dropped from all but 3 houses between first round and second round, and I’m curious what sororities look for when they decide to keep people after Round Robbins. I think I’m reasonably attractive, I’m a first year, and I have a decent GPA (3.5). I’m not upset because two of them are my top choices, but I was surprised I was dropped by so many.

It’s very hard for someone to judge you based on 5 minute conversations. A lot of sororities judge based on looks (sadly). Sororities also do care if you know sisters in that sorority...even middle and lower tiers. Don’t ever feel that you aren’t enough and that you aren’t wanted. I promise you are! Find the house that you fit in with and trust the process, even though it can be very harsh!

To be honest, I find some of the people who do very well at rush (ie get invited back to every house, always had full schedules) are some of the least likeable people in real life. Some people just thrive in that awkward small talk environment, and a lot of times, it can be because they’re good at being fake. Sounds like you’re doing okay, but really try not to take it personally.

This goes to everybody feeling a little unsettled aout rush. Try not to take it to heart. The kind of people UVA admits and attracts tend to be overachievers who are used to being the best in most everything they do. UVA in itself tends to breed competition (i.e. Living on the Lawn, UGuides, Jefferson Society, etc.). The round robbins of rush are inherently VERY superficial; how can 5 minute conversations not be? You may not be the best at wowing certain sorority girls off the bat, but honestly, if that's your major character flaw, be relieved bc there are much worse things such as being fake. Keep doing you and know that sororities aren't for everybody. BUT, if you do find quality people in greek life you think are worth your time and money, then awesome. I got into a pretty good sorority per douchey stupid standards and stayed for a semester because, according to everybody around me, I should "trust the process." But, I ended up dropping after a semester of wasted time and money cause it just wasn't for me. Only you know what's best for you. Screw the process if it tells you you aren't good enough because it's crazy flawed.
