brown vs uva? gimme your wisdom, please

by:

I'm from nw DC and love Uva (parents are alums) but also really love brown -- but I've spent far more time at Uva than just a visit to Brown. No disrespect to Uva but is it a no brainer to go to Brown if I get in? thank you.

so a couple things... first of all this is not the right place at all to go to for advice on your college decision. secondly, i have a friend at brown who hates it and i transferred to uva from a northern school with a "better" academic rep so it's not really a "no brainer" to go to brown.

thank you for responding. so i have a ton of friends at Uva and thought a cool part of Brown is not knowing a many people there. but i can see how that could be tough, too.

can you share what your friend hated about providence? what did you hate about penn-dartmouth wherever you were? were finances another factor? brown is def going to be a little more money than oos uva.

thank you!!

money was definitely a factor for me. after a year i realized it really wasn't worth paying more than twice as much as i would at uva for a school that i felt pretty meh about. also like you i thought it would be good to be somewhere far from home where i wouldn't know anyone from high school, but i ended up wishing i knew more people going in. a lot of people in ivy league/nescac come from the same california/ny/boston area private schools and they all know each other. like @unbiased said, the social life at uva is a lot more active and people know how to have fun, whereas at ivies/nescac schools a lot of people spend their weekends studying. northern schools are also crazy liberal and very focused on social justice issues, which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it, but in my experience it led to a lot of conflict and a pretty unwelcoming atmosphere on campus. also brown does have greek life but it's not very popular, and many northern schools don't have greek life or are moving to eliminate greek life, so if you're interested in going greek that's something to consider.

hey so social life wise UVA definitely has a better atmosphere, being more Greek and having less of that ivy competition. Brown is a more fluid school academically like with their curriculum. Greekrank isn't really the best source for this comparison though cause uva has a much better Greek life than them so there is no comparison

UVA is a DC TAG school, which saves you like $10,000 per year off tuition.

Let's say Brown is $80,000-100,000 more all in over the four years. Is an Ivy credential worth it? If you plan to get into consulting or investment banking, then yeah, it honestly is. I believe 4th year (26-years-old) Goldman Sachs bankers make like $400,000 per year. A cute girl at Brown is going to get amazing job opportunities from the most elite companies in the nation. Offers that only the top 5%, if at all, here can get a call back on.

And I'd guess chance to meet a super smart rich New England boy is slightly higher, but there are a couple thousand smart rich boys here too.

this is not true at all...investment banking barely recruits from brown-they don't have a business school they have a weird business major

Biggest difference I can think of is the mix of people. At UVA you'll find a little bit of everything - from frat stars to super quirky feminists to engineering geniuses (nerds) to incredible athletes. It's just a much bigger, more socially diverse school. I have lots of friends at Brown and the ones that liked it and stayed have similar vibes - very progressive, environmentally conscious, free thinkers, "SJW" type. Sure Brown will have some of the other types too, but not nearly as many as UVA. If you're like how I described Brown, then perfect. You'll enjoy it whereas at UVA you'll have to work a little harder to find your people. If that's not really your vibe, you might end up like my friends who didn't fit with Brown and transferred

ivies have a 98-99% retention rate. you knew more than one friend that transferred here? sounds sorta bizarre.

I transferred from a school with a 96% retention rate, and I know four other people who transferred this year just out of my class (and two others thinking about transferring next semester). It happens.

They didn't transfer here, but they transferred out of Brown. Just because it's rare doesn't mean it doesn't happen

Parchment says Brown wins head-to-head vs Virginia 90:10. I don't know anyone who would turn down Brown, it's the chillest Ivy. Go to Brown and visit friends here a couple times a year. Win win

When status-obsessed greek life here gets drunk they all brag about how they turned down Ivies to come here. It's all bs. Kids here have chips on their shoulder because they got rejected from all the Ivies and Vandy and Duke.

By: HAHAHAAAA

Not drunk or lying, I got into Duke and Vandy (didn't apply to ivies because I didn't want to go North, probs wouldn't have gotten in) and I chose UVA. Are these all fantastic schools and could some argue the others are better than UVA? Sure. Definitely debatable, but sure. You gotta understand the difference in cost tho if you're part of the 70% of UVA from Virginia....arguably equal education and prestige, fraction of the price

yeah, totally. you're at uva and not duke because of the value. nobody believes you or anyone else who says this BS. stop lying. and if you are telling the truth you have horrible decision making skills and a fear of competitive environments.

lmao yes paying less than half the tuition for a comparable school, awful decision making skills!! Duke is absolutely more prestigious, but I agree with this person. I wouldn't make my parents pay that much more (or take out monstrous loans) for some more "prestige". If you've got money to blow, go for it! But a lot of kids, like myself, are at UVA because paying for a private university that's ranked a little higher didn't seem worth it

I know who you are, and you are correct. YOU are waaaaay too stupid to go to Duke, Vandy or UVA.

look into the programs for what you want to study! If you are thinking business than UVA is far and away a better place than brown in terms of recruiting and program. If you are looking for a better liberal arts education than Brown is better. Love uva though you won't regret it!

lol @ status-obsessed Greeks telling OP to come here over an Ivy. Everyone in Greek life would be at Penn-Dartmouth-Brown if they could have gotten in. And then they'd visit friends here rocking BROWN t-shirts and crewnecks all weekend lol

by: well

Didnt apply to any ivies and on the off chance that I got into one, it wouldn't significantly hurt my family to make my parents pay that much more than UVA in state tuition. Picking a college is about lot more than how highly a school is ranked. Think a little

Your parents should slap you if you'd turn down an Ivy for here.

Frat stars here would all be at Penn or Dartmouth if they could be. And every sorority queen would go to any Ivy including Brown and Cornell if they could. Every Ivy outside of Cornell has single digit acceptance rates & makes you a lock for Wall Street or Silicon Valley $$$$$. No brainer.
