brown vs uva? gimme your wisdom, please
by: '18I'm from nw DC and love Uva (parents are alums) but also really love brown -- but I've spent far more time at Uva than just a visit to Brown. No disrespect to Uva but is it a no brainer to go to Brown if I get in? thank you.

so a couple things... first of all this is not the right place at all to go to for advice on your college decision. secondly, i have a friend at brown who hates it and i transferred to uva from a northern school with a "better" academic rep so it's not really a "no brainer" to go to brown.

hey so social life wise UVA definitely has a better atmosphere, being more Greek and having less of that ivy competition. Brown is a more fluid school academically like with their curriculum. Greekrank isn't really the best source for this comparison though cause uva has a much better Greek life than them so there is no comparison

UVA is a DC TAG school, which saves you like $10,000 per year off tuition.
Let's say Brown is $80,000-100,000 more all in over the four years. Is an Ivy credential worth it? If you plan to get into consulting or investment banking, then yeah, it honestly is. I believe 4th year (26-years-old) Goldman Sachs bankers make like $400,000 per year. A cute girl at Brown is going to get amazing job opportunities from the most elite companies in the nation. Offers that only the top 5%, if at all, here can get a call back on.
And I'd guess chance to meet a super smart rich New England boy is slightly higher, but there are a couple thousand smart rich boys here too.

Biggest difference I can think of is the mix of people. At UVA you'll find a little bit of everything - from frat stars to super quirky feminists to engineering geniuses (nerds) to incredible athletes. It's just a much bigger, more socially diverse school. I have lots of friends at Brown and the ones that liked it and stayed have similar vibes - very progressive, environmentally conscious, free thinkers, "SJW" type. Sure Brown will have some of the other types too, but not nearly as many as UVA. If you're like how I described Brown, then perfect. You'll enjoy it whereas at UVA you'll have to work a little harder to find your people. If that's not really your vibe, you might end up like my friends who didn't fit with Brown and transferred

look into the programs for what you want to study! If you are thinking business than UVA is far and away a better place than brown in terms of recruiting and program. If you are looking for a better liberal arts education than Brown is better. Love uva though you won't regret it!

Frat stars here would all be at Penn or Dartmouth if they could be. And every sorority queen would go to any Ivy including Brown and Cornell if they could. Every Ivy outside of Cornell has single digit acceptance rates & makes you a lock for Wall Street or Silicon Valley $$$$$. No brainer.

thank you for responding. so i have a ton of friends at Uva and thought a cool part of Brown is not knowing a many people there. but i can see how that could be tough, too.
can you share what your friend hated about providence? what did you hate about penn-dartmouth wherever you were? were finances another factor? brown is def going to be a little more money than oos uva.
thank you!!
