sorority dues

by: Curious

I'll be a first year next year and would like to go through rush. How much are dues each semester and what exactly do you get for your money? My parents are skeptical of the whole sorority idea and I need help convincing them it'll be worth it.

Sorority dues can range from $800-$1800 for the first semester and then after it drops to between $600-$1200 per semester. It really depends on the sorority. If you look up ISC UVA they have a booklet from last years recruitment that has all the prices. The higher priced houses usually have a chef that comes in and cooks for them. Pricing includes - formals, date functions, 2 tshirts per semester (depends), philanthropy events, meals, badge, and other things! Hope this helps!

Thanks! I found the recruitment booklet and it's helpful but a little confusing. Do the prices include meals even for your first semester when you're required to have a meal plan? It still seems like a lot of money for a social club. How can I convince my parents it will be worth the cost?

For most sororitys the meal plans only start your second year, some will let you have one meal at the house your first year; you also have to realize that some sororitys the meal plans are extra (i know DG is like that). In my opinion it is a lot of money, but I find it to be worth it. Most sororitys are good about working with you if finances are an issue (i.e. splitting up your dues into like 7 or 8 payments instead of the usual one or two installments that most people do). Your dues breakdown into chapter dues, national dues, parlor fees (aka the house), insurance, panhellenic dues, new member fees, board (this depends on the meal plans of the house), technology fee, composite fee, badge, as well as a couple of small other fees. In addition to this you have to factor in other costs, such as the cost of big sis week when you get a little (think in the $200+ range), t-shirts from events like formal (these t-shirts are often not included in dues), other spiritwear (may not be necessary, but you are going to want), costumes for date functions (yes, a lot is reusable and can be borrowed, but for some of the crazier themes you are probably going to need to buy something), Foxfield (around $80) and I'm sure there is more that I'm forgetting. In return for all these costs you usually have each semester at least 2 date functions, a formal, a sisterhood event, one t-shirt, philanthropy events (you have to recruit people to participate in them though and if you don't reach your quota you have to

make up the difference... aka another cost), meals (possibly), use of the house (I love studying in my house), and a group of lifelong friends! It may seem that I'm ragging on the cost of Greek life and while it is very expensive I truly believe it is worth it! In terms of convincing your parents I wouldn't use what you physically get from your dues, cause honestly it is not all that much, but rather the intangible things you get by joining a sorority, like friends that share common values, connections for after college, and so much more! I hope this helps!!
