"top" bs

by:

Okay y'all, now that I am a grad student and effectively unemployed, I have the time to give my two cents about this whole Greek Rank thing. First of all, once you graduate, the "tier" of the sorority you were in becomes completely irrelevant. What truly matters is the person you are and the character that you have. Furthermore, the bs reputation a sorority has tends to be untrue, as some of my closest friends were all from different sororities and are all equally as awesome. Lastly, when selecting a sorority, look at the girls in it and not its perceived reputation. Ask yourself, are these the people that will make me a better person? Are these the people I can see being best friends with? Some of my friends selected a sorority because it was "top tier", and they ended up regretting their decision immensely. I am also going to add that basing a sorority's "status" off of attractiveness is just precipitating an outdated patriarchal system that I think needs to change. To me, the quality of a sorority depends on the quality of the people, its involvement, and it's sisterhood. When I rushed, that's what I looked for, and it has honestly helped make these last four years some the best years of my life. Choose well and wisely. Good times Go Hoos.

I think once you graduate the sorority you choose becomes VERY relevant if you want a strong network of business contacts. My mother is a realtor and her sorority contacts are invaluable to her. Most of them are not from her school. It's one of the few equivalents we have of the "Old Boy's Network." Not a big deal if you plan on going into nursing or teaching. Almost anything else? Choose carefully.

Otherwise I think they all serve a similar role in providing a great social/philanthropic experience while on Grounds.

So are you saying tha it might make sense to choose a sorority based on their national presence? Not necessarily their rankings at UVA, because we have some sororities that are huge nationally but the UVA chapters are sub par

I admit this is hearsay, but it's what I've gathered from older family-members: a greek-organization's national-presence can start to pay valuable-dividends once you're out in the world.

I think it's another factor to consider when choosing. Better a subpar with a strong national presence than a subpar with a weak national.
