derby days
by: When? When are the sororities going to wise up and just say "NO" to Derby Days? Giving all that time and effort to let Sigma Chi take the credit? Making the sororities compete with each other to raise money for them? Come on ladies, you are better than that. It's time to change.

At my school, my sorority just said "no thank you" and didn't do it one year after being fed up with the crudeness and egotism of the Sigma Chis and having to be all "ooh yay we love sigma chi" and them getting all the credit for the money we worked so hard to raise that took us away from our own stuff. We didn't come out with a public announcement and make it a cause or anything, just quietly declined to participate, after much debate and discussion in chapter. They came to us, in shock and wanted to know why, and our absence was NOTICED by the other sororities, most of whom came to us to find out why and we told them. That year Derby Days was just not the same for anyone, having less than 100% participation from all the sororities. We did not suffer socially, or in rank, or in rush because of dropping out of Derby Days. The stigma, it turns out, was all on SX - the other fraternities loved that they had this little fail and they lost some prestige and rushees because of it. The next year some of the other sororities were empowered and they declined also, for the exact same reasons we cited. Sigma Chi panicked, scrambled, and made good on promises to change the things we all hated: remove events that were demeaning and crude, clamp down on individual brothers' language and behavior, and split the funds raised with the winning sorority's philanthropy. We came back to the fold when it was clear they meant what they said. And won that year.

do y'all not think it takes a lot of organizational work on the part of Sigma Chi? I'm sure it's not easy to organize and plan all that stuff. I understand the argument that decorating the house, chasing hats, playing powderpuff, etc doesn't raise money, but no one would participate if it was all just about donating money. If they have to do some silly and irrelevant things to get people involved, I say they should go for it.

I think that's what you have to do here. Because those knuckle-heads don't take any in-house criticism on the event. Change on it has got to come from the ladies.
