hazing at umass?
by: Help a girl outHey! I don’t actually go here, but I’m doing research on Panhellenic hazing at various Universities. If anyone feels comfortable telling me, I am trying to find out if any sororities haze here, if so, which ones and what do they do/how bad it is. How does the general student body feel about hazing? If you could also mention whether you experienced it or whether you heard about It secondhand would be really helpful too!

I can't speak for other organizations but for me, the process wasn't bad at all. I feel like everything that happened was very necessary for boding and building mutual respect for the sisters and new members. I love my sorority and I'd definitely do it all over again if given the option. I think the only reason people flip out is because the word "hazing" is a loaded word. I didn't see my process as 'hazing' but just like being new at anything. When you go anywhere you're going to have to work a little harder to catch up to and earn the respect of people who are already there and if you're not willing to do that then you don't really belong there. I've heard bad things about other sorties but they've also heard bad things about us and we're not what people say. So no, I don't think Umass hazes in the way they're thinking.

This was really helpful- thank you! I'm writing my senior Thesis on Greek culture around the country and I wanted to include as many perspectives as possible since most pieces out there paint the pledging process as either inherently bad or inherently good with no middle ground!
