actual guide to rushing frats at umass
by: thankmelater
Tired of seeing all of the frat rankings that clearly are being posted by brothers of certain fraternities trying to make themselves look better than they are.
If you are a guy at planning on rushing a fraternity at UMass, understand that the process isn't nearly as formal as with sororities and you will likely not have the opportunity to rush every fraternity. As a senior in greek life I have had the opportunity to mix with almost every frat and know whats going on at UMass. Take my advice when figuring out where you want to rush. If social life is a priority I would recommend one of the following 6 frats.
Theta Chi - Nicest physical house out of any top social fraternity. Very large in numbers, tend to be good looking from Eastern Mass. Closest with SK but mix with all top and middle sororities and are well liked. Tend to be very full of themselves and care more about how they appear than what they do, which leads to mediocre parties and philanthropy despite their high status. Usually let some guys outside the fraternity into their parties. Very cliquey amongst themselves.

Pike - Have a real lettered house but it is one of the dirtiest and smallest. Very large in numbers, pull some kids from Long Island/Jersey and some from Mass. Kind of viewed as the meathead frat, but also good looking. The only frat that kappa really mixes and hangs out with consistently, and mix with all other top and middle sororities. Philanthropy is solid and parties are very fun, but strict at the door don't let guys outside the fraternity in. Tend to be cliquey and have a lot of brothers that don't show up to many things.
AEPi – Lack a real lettered house and just lost their Phillips house, however they are transitioning into turning the former club hockey and ski and board houses they acquired into their main houses (both very nice houses, a little smaller than Pike). Also have sunset which is the best spot any frat has for day drinks. Medium in numbers but not cliquey. A lot of kids from New York City, New Jersey and Long Island, mostly pretty average looking with some standouts. The favorite of both SDT and AEPhi but still have some mixers with top sororities. Philanthropy is solid and they throw the most parties out of any fraternity. Will sometimes let outside guys into parties but usually tends to be brothers only.

Well done OP, these are the best ranks I've seen on this site. Agree with the idea that from a sorority perspective it isn't really about top tier or middle tier. Those 6 frats (maybe take Sig ep off the list) are all worth hanging out with and from that point it's more about personal preference than rank.

Sigma chi wasn't mentioned on this list because they're so new, but it's probably easier to get a bid from them because they're still growing in numbers. They're focusing a lot on social calendars and have mixers with all the top sororities this semester. Good looking group of guys but no where near top tier yet due to having no set house and lacking in numbers. In a few years though they could easily be top 3.

Phi Sig – Really nice house similar to Theta Chi’s. Very large in numbers, brothers tend to be from Mass. Large in numbers, a bit cliquey but not too much. Not always the best looking guys but some are. Solid philanthropy and parties, usually pretty good about letting outside guys into parties. Well liked by most sororities including the top ones, but don’t have a sorority they are truly the closest with.
TKE – No real lettered house, but acquired a house on nutting which should help them a lot. Medium in numbers, mostly from Mass and pretty good looking. They are a newer frat so don’t have strong lasting relationships with sororities but are still well liked by most of them. Solid philanthropy, parties can use improvement but the new house should help. Not that cliquey anymore but had a lot of brothers disaffiliate recently.
Sig Ep – No real lettered house since losing it a few years back, got their house on Phillips back but lost nutting. Medium in numbers, mostly average looking from Mass. Okay philanthropy and a bunch of parties, not really a favorite of sororities but still mix with all of them including top. Heard there is becoming a huge divide between brothers.
