sorority dues
by: incoming freshmancan anyone give an estimate (or an exact amount if possible) of the dues/costs of each sorority? If anyone knows the dues from last year thatd be super helpful... id like to know before recruitment starts

I highly doubt someone would post this information & there's no way to know before I believe house tours round where the sororities you go to on that day will give you a break down of the finances and how much it will be. Sororities without houses are less expensive, but generally arent as wanted during recruitment because a house an attractive feature for most. Please know that it's extremely common at umass to pay your own dues and many girls do it so don't let that discourage you! Good luck

If you are worried about expenses you should certainly make this known during recruitment to find out the facts. Rush is the only time you will hear the hard numbers of the costs associated with becoming a sister, and it is best to know what you are getting yourself into before you fall in love with a sorority that you can't afford. As much as we all wish money doesn't have to play a factor, there is no way around it, dues have to be paid.

Some houses end up being cheaper than living in dorms, whereas others are more expensive. If you aren't living in the house you still have to pay dues which are at least a few hundred per semester. Nothing crazy like in the south (I've heard their dues are thousands) but still a financial impact. The dues cover events and formals but still costs tend to add up. However, many girls in each chapter pay their own dues and most chapters are very understanding of the financial strain and try to minimize it as much as possible. Kappa and aephi tend to be wealthier girls but they are understanding as well that some girls pay their own.

At least for my chapter, we have a payment plan and are very understanding/flexible about not being able to pay at the exact time dues are sent out. I imagine the other chapters here are like that too. It definitely is a significant chunk of change though, especially if you're paying yourself. I had a girl in my PC drop a few weeks in because she realized she wasn't going to be able to afford it, which really sucks. So definitely make it a priority to find out and consider your finances before bid day!

It's not a secret, but it's different each year for each chapter and since usually girls don't talk about it a ton it's hard to know what other chapters cost so people would only be able to post their own chapters. Plus some chapters have dues include alcohol at mixers, some include formals, some include house dues, etc so it really all changes
