when rushing for a sorority how hard to they or do they even check GPA ?

All sororities check GPA and have minimum GPA standards. Each chapter's nationals will set a required minimum, but chapters can raise it if they want to. During formal recruitment, Panhellenic will check to make sure each potential new member meets the PHA minimum, and during informal the chapters will do it themselves. It's not self reported; they get official reports from the university. Most chapters also have some sort of academic excellence committee and required study hours, and GPA factors into voting during recruitment (although how much it does probably depends on the chapter).
