Something for the PNMs

by: member

A friend of mine from UArk showed me this post from their GR and I think it’s something the PNMs here need to see:

I’m in a top house. I remember standing with all my fellow pnms a few years ago anxiously awaiting to open my envelope. I had my top house and a lower one left on preference round. I opened my envelope and was so beyond excited that I got in! I did it, I was in a top house. But I’m going to keep in real with you now, I don’t fit in. I have no friends in my house. I have my big that I talk to on a rare occasion. I’m not involved at all. All I do is pay dues. I thought when I wore my letters it would help me be liked on campus but the truth is that nobody cares. Friends I had in more dorm went to mid and lower houses. They all made a ton of friends and love their houses. I got left behind. I know now that I made a mistake. I didn’t connect with my house during recruitment but I didn’t care - it was a top house.

Pnms, go where you connect. Don’t go where you don’t genuinely feel at home. It’s not about the letters, it’s about finding your place. No one cares if you’re wearing Kappa’s letters or DG’s. Follow your heart not the top/bottom house noise in your head. Just my raw and honest advice.

you guys, this post is the real deal. one of my best friends just dropped her “top tier” house here because she preffed by rankings over where she actually was connecting with the girls and so she never felt like she belonged. trust your gut

freshman year i received a bid from a house that’s considered a top here at ku, simply because i assumed that being a “top”, they were somehow better than the other house i had on pref. after recruitment, this house wasn’t at all like what they showed me during recruitment. just like the comment above me stated, i didn’t fit in at ALL with my pc and had to pretend to be someone i wasn’t to feel like i belonged. some people will genuinely connect more with top houses and that’s okay! just don’t force yourself to go with the letters that are higher in the ranks, the other houses will surprise you with what they have to offer.

I didn't know anyone else felt the same as me. I had a "top tier" house left on preference day and a "not so top tier" house. I ended up choosing the "top tier" just for status and on KU campus no one cares. I tried to get involved in the sorority and couldn't make any genuine friends, all just "party friends." This isn't to say not to choose a top tier house, just think twice about why you choose it and don't make the same mistake I did.

Go where you actually connect with the girls! :) this isn’t high school, there isn’t a “social status” at KU for Greek life
