Trust me, hearts are breaking all over Lawrence this morning. 2nd round cuts are rough! Make no mistake, girls who went to KC and Wichita high schools are at a distinct advantage over OOS girls. But if you only think you are good enough for just a few select houses, then chances are you never really had a chance.

My daughter called me crying this morning, she was cut from all remaining sororities. I went to KU and was not in a sorority because of the crap but I wanted her to have her own experience and kept my thoughts to myself. Now I'm left trying to undo all the damage this awful week has done to her confidence. Girls, if you see this, rise above the crap. This degrading process has nothing to do with who you are.

KU MOM... Does your daughter know anyone at KU? I totally agree this process has nothing to do with who you are. You can not get to know someone in 25 min. This rush process should be done after your fall semester of your freshman year after you establish a group of friends and it wouldnt be as hard on the girls.

This is such an inaccurate and inappropriate post. Open your eyes. There's a reason your daughter didn't get asked back to a single house, and it isn't because you're out of state. Grow up.

@KU...shame on you. If you are yet another sorority girl telling a mother to grow up... well, I would say that the mother and her daughter should count their blessings that she (the daughter) didn't make it into a house. It's attitudes such as yours that add to the negative stereotype that many people hold of sorority girls.

Many campuses went to deferred recruitment (Spring Semester) just for this reason. A PNM has a bad recruitment, thinks her life is over and wants to transfer. Deferred recruitment allows the PNM to establish a solid existence and keep her on campus.

OP, your life is not over, go to class, study hard, get good grades, get involved and meet a lot of people.

My daughter started off the week with lots of confidence. She enjoyed rush and got almost maximum call backs each day, until the last day, where she was dropped, except by two. One she really liked, had great visits with. The other she felt she was not going to fit in and no connection. She ended up with no bid today, and is thinking what did she do wrong? She is devastated and the majority of her dorm is now sorority, including her two room mates. Everyone I've told is shocked bc she's well rounded, great grades, outgoing, tons of service hours and heavily involved in both in/out school, rec letters from many alumni's, and to top it off, she is a pretty girl. I've never seen her this depressed and am very frustrated with her going through all this for nothing, other than less confidence. This was supposed to be a great time in her life. The only thing I can think of is there was a high number of girls rushing this year, but still just very very frustrated.

The number of girls going through is completely irrelevant. Quota is set by the number of girls going to preference parties. Did your daughter list BOTH houses she visited for pref on her card, or did she just list the one she liked? I'm suspecting that's what she did because if you maximize your options (listing ALL the parties you attended) you are GUARANTEED a bid. Good luck to her. Have her keep her grades up and make friends and try COB or informal in the spring or try again in the fall.

I'm sick of hearing girls say their confidence is shattered grow up

@fu...In reading your reply, I am surmising that you are a sorority girl? To the parents who wrote about their daughters' rush experiences... my sympathies are extended to you and your daughters. Rush is a demoralizing experience for many girls, especially the ones who are completely cut or the ones who don't get their first choice(s). It is easy for the rest of us to voice our opinions on why someone didn't get asked back, etc. I am appalled at some of the comments on this site... I was never a sorority girl but my sister was and I can tell you that rush is often a game of who you know and who you don't as to which house you get bids from. Girls who have the same g.p.a.'s and other "qualifications" as others are cut after the first day for reasons they will never understand. Is it a crime to desire a certain house and when not asked back, decide to drop out? No... if a girl doesn't click with a house then she shouldn't join. End of story... this does not make her a lesser individual or mean that she is a queen bee who thinks she's above the other houses. Joining a sorority just for the sake of joining is silly!! Some girls need the sense of belonging that a sorority gives... it's an extension of their high school experience, perhaps. Tell your daughters not to go away from this process with shattered confidence because in the end, it's a bunch of girls making a judgement call on another person in a short amount of time. It's a difficult process for all involved.

Most of the ones with shattered confidence are ones who only thought they'd fit in at a top house. They didn't take the time to get to know any girls in the middle or lower houses. So when the top ones cut them, they dropped out. Tooooooo bad for them. All the houses at KU are filled with great girls. A bid from any house is a treasure not to be taken lightly.
