top tier worries

by:

Is a 3.15-3.5 (theres two people I am inquiring about) gpa good enough for a top tier house? Do they look for nearly 4.0s exclusively?

Chi Omega, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Gamma Phi Beta look for the higher GPAs. A 3.5 should be fine. A 3.15 is cutting it a little close for all of the top tier. But, as long as her looks and personality are on point and she was involved in high school, she'll be fine.

What about a 3.25 is that still a stretch?

3.25 will work if you're beautiful and have an awesome personality. Otherwise....good luck.

A lot of those houses have lower GPA cuts than people think and I believe a 3.25 is above that (although not entirely sure for ChiO). The houses that have higher grade cuts usually have a small number of "grade risks" that they can take. I believe you can contact a chapter to ask their grade requirement.

Below a 3.0 is where you will be a grade cut on the first day. But everything works out!

Hmm... I know a beautiful, talented, thin (isn't that a prereq.) girl with a genuine personality and who had a 3.7 g.p.a. and she did not get a glance by chi o, kappa, or theta. Meanwhile, several of her classmates with similar g.p.a.'s, looks, etc. were bid on by these houses. The only advantage I could see was that these other girls knew how to play the game. They visited the house several times during their last year in high school, established connections and had a very good friend from their home town who talked them up. It's just a game and some girls know how to play and some don't nor do they care. The aforementioned girl dropped out her last day because she knew that Greek life wasn't for her.

No. The aforementioned girl dropped out because she didn't like any of the options she had left on pref day. Being "beautiful, talented, thin" means she's only fit for top chapters, right?? Ridiculous. And she shows a LACK of genuine personality by not even giving those chapters she had left a look, probably because she was so invested in top chapters, she didn't bother getting to know anyone else.

So she shows a lack of genuine personality? Really? Do you know her? No... so don't make a judgement call based on a few bits of info posted. I know this person and I guarantee that she was open to all the chapters. In fact, she very much liked two of the three houses that were still an option for her but in the end decided that she was NOT interested in joining any house. I think that shows a decided amount of character not to join just for the sake of joining. The vast majority of young women don't opt for the Greek life at KU because they see it for what it truly is... bs.

The girl who did not pref on the last day totally missed what the Greek system at KU is all about. Our friend's daughter has said many times that she would have never made it through engineering school without the study group she found in the Greek community. The Greek system is a driven, hard working group of young adults who support each other. The lessons learned in this invironment go beyond "top tier". Unfortunately a lot of "queen bees" in high school go though rush with the idea that they only deserve what they perceive as "the best" house. This girl is missing out on one of the greatest (and fun) experiences in college. I was a Greek in college and I still, after 30 years, feel an immediate connection with any one I meet, from any college or chapter who was a Greek.

@go greek... this girl was no queen bee in high school. I'm not sure why you would imply that from the info given and from the fact that she decided not to pref as you put it. So awesome for you that after 30 years you still feel an immediate connection with anyone who was Greek!! That speaks volumes.
