what should i do now?

by:

Bring from out of state i feel like I’m kind of at a disadvantage for rush just because i don’t know anyone. It’s important to me to be in a sorority where I actually fit in rather than just one where all the girls who who don’t know anyone get put. Are there things i can do now that will improve my chances (grades, social media) or things that sororities really look for before recruitment? Or am i just out of luck lol.

Sororities at KU are unfortunately very cliquey. I was out of state and thought I clicked really well with a few houses but apparently since I didn't know any of the girls I was cut. They honestly do not want anything to do with you unless you are from their high school or home town or good friends with them or someone they know well. Exactly what you just said happened, I got put in a middle house with a bunch of girls who were in the same boat as me. It really isn't all that bad. You get to make new friends, whereas if I had been put in a clique house I truly believe I would never be completely accepted and been pretty lonely. Although I love my house and all the girls, if you're not in certain houses you will always be on the outside as far as frats go. They won't do date parties with you and do not want to participate in HC or RCR with you. But you learn to deal, and realize a sorority is but a tiny bit of your life. It's four years, and when you graduate no one will care what house you were in.

If you listen to people like the immature girl responding as #1, you'll never be in a house. The truth is that she's pretty hung up on her middle school persona and is not able to be very accurate about what's going on in college. Cliques are something from the 1950s, not from the 2010s. Yes, every house has multiple sets of girls who are great friends. They have "families" consisting of big sisters, little sisters, etc. Also they're very close. They have girls that knew each other from high school. They have girls from out of state that are friends with everyone. They have quiet girls, outgoing girls, peppy girls, lazy girls, academic girls, party girls, readers, ones that never pick up a book unless they have to, sporty girls, pageant girls, etc. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO "FIT IN" IN ANY HOUSE. I promise. But you do have to make an effort.

I'm from out of state and I knew no girls in the houses! I had a really great rush and am in a house that I love. Don't let it discourage you. It only takes one great conversation to impact how a house thinks of you. Each girl has a say when it comes down to who they want, and I'm sure if you have good grades and are as nice as possible, rush will be easy for you. I noticed a ton of in-state girls with terrible reputations who got cut because they KNEW people, and being out of state is a huge advantage to that. Good luck :)

I agree with this 100%. Although knowing people can be an advantage in some houses, in these same houses it may also be a disadvantage because they would already know your reputation and who you were in highschool. Go into it open minded and be outgoing and you will end up where you are supposed to be.

I'm OOS and my best friends still are the girls I met in the dorms. We are in different houses but still really close. I sensed the cliques in the top houses and on pref day actually preffed a middle house as my first choice and I really am glad I did. No regrets.

I was also from out of state, but I worked really hard to get my grades up, worked crazy hard on my extracurriculars so I would have an amazing resume. I also made some great rush packets so that I would get at least 2 or 3 letters of recommendation from each house. Letters of rec are very important to have for a lot of houses, most of the time if you don't have them, houses will not know who you are/anything about you before recruitment which puts you at a disadvantage because they will be going only on first impressions. Try and do this. Also work on your conversations, try and ask a ton of questions that will make you stand out during recruitment. I did all of these things and ended up in a house that I fit in super well, as well as a house (not that it matters at all becasue it does not!) that is considered one of the top houses on campus.
