safe ride/safe bus

by:

Hi, I am a Greek alumni from a different campus. The Safe Ride/bus program was brought to my attention as an alternative to the all to common pledge uber programs that are often used. What are your thoughts on the Safe Ride/bus program? does it work like it is designed? Improvements?

I think safe-ride is underrated on campus! Most kids use uber, but this program is literally a free alternative to that. No matter how intoxicated you are, the drivers are there to get you home safe and are always super nice. They do only take you back home to campus though, not to a destination, for that you use safe bus which can be a pain to wait for. But I 100% recommend using saferide on a night out, or even if you're sober and too lazy to drive!

Free? Do you know where they get their funding from? Is their a student activity fee that is dedicated to it? Grant etc?

Technically you do "pay" for safe ride and it is included in your enrollment fee. But, I talked to a driver one night and he told me that after a small amount of rides, the rest are technically free. Most kids don't really use it as often as they could, so they make a lot of money off the kids who pay the fee and don't use it! I'm not sure the exact number of rides the driver said, but I know that it is under 10 and after that its like a free uber!

what are the downsides to the service? just the wait time? I don't know the KU campus that well, if they are taking you through campus, does that include the greek houses as well? Is the fee divided among all KU students or is it just the Greek system? Sorry for all the questions, but I like the idea if it is working like it is designed.

Safe ride isn't practical because they only pick you up if you aren't on a safe bus route. If there is a safe bus stop within a mile from your destination you can't get safe ride. Ever try walking a mile in a dress and heels when it's 10 degrees out and snowing? Safe ride is a joke

A mile?? wow. that's crazy. Thanks for the input. Just to clarify though, more stops and a more flexible pick up radius would allow you to use it frequently. What do you use now?

They need to consider more things than simply the distance to a stop. The weather for one. In those situations you are forced to stay somewhere you don't feel safe or risk driving while impaired.

Why is it for GDI's? I suspect I know the answer to that...
