out of state sorority chances?
by: jayhawkmaybeI'm considering KU for fall of 2018, but am from Texas. Reading posts here it sounds like KU sororities are hard to get into if you don't know actives in the houses. Are OOS girls even looked at if they don't know someone?

It's not hard to get in a sorority at KU at all. What I think your concern is is getting into a certain house, one that takes most of their girls from their high schools or from Johnson County. There are many fine sororities that won't care if you're out of state. Why worry about the ones who do? You don't want to be in a house as an outsider, you will not get in the clique and you will be miserable. Contrary to what some of the sororities think, the vast majority of girls in "middle" and "bottom" houses are perfectly happy, make many new friends, and have a great 4 years at KU.

It can be challenging to get into Kappa, Gamma Phi, Chi Omega, Theta and Pi Phi unless you have well established friends in these sororities. If you are from out of state, just because you have one good friend, doesn't mean she will have enough pull to get you in unless you are super spectacular and have met other members and they like you and are going to pull for you too. Many of us have seen members get up and make desperate speeches to keep a certain someone or another during membership selection, and even though the person might be awesome, there are just others who pull more weight, especially if they already know lots of people.
As others have said, even if you do get a bid to one of these, it doesn't mean you will be welcomed the way other obvious bid list picks will be. If you feel like people are lukewarm about seeing you return to the next party, remember they will be equally unenthusiastic when you show up on bid day, and that is a terrible feeling.

^^ This. I was out of state and was dropped from all the "top" houses even though I have the whole package, looks, involvement, grades, etc. During rounds it was easy to tell they were just going through the motions. Most of these houses already have their pledge class picked before rush starts. I ended up in a "middle" house and love it. I have made true friends with some of the nicest girls that their only crime was they weren't from JOCO. Never regretted it for even one day.
