recruitment mess up?
by: oopsDid girls get dropped even though they put a house as their number one and the house wanted them back? I’ve heard a lot of girls saying that sisters were confused why they didn’t come back but they never got a bid. Was something messed up? Also, I’ve read through the discussion and seen stuff about this happening with KKG.

Recruitment is all a numbers game. The way it works is that the chapters give Panhellenic a bid list either after sisterhood or after pref (depends on the chapter). Panhellenic then has algorithms to determine how many girls off that bid list actually get a bid to that chapter as they want to ensure that all houses have girls run home to them on bid day. It’s a misconception that a chapter member knows if your going to get a bid. They might know that you’re on the bid list and how high you are on that list, but because of this whole Panhellenic algorithm thing it is very difficult to determine which girls are actually going to get bids. If they’re high on the bid list, ya they’re probably a good shot. If they’re lower it’s harder to tell.
NOW, what happened this year? A couple things. Because we had Theta participate in formal recruitment, Panhellenic had to revise the algorithms and basically make guesses about how theta would perform. They were not accurate in making these estimates which threw off the bid numbers. Also, they were extremely strict with suicide bidders this year. Only a a very very slim few got bids if they suicided bidded. So in short yes, there were mess ups mostly in determining how many girls got bids/in determining how many girls came back to pref each house. Panhellenic in an effort to make the process as fair as possible made mistakes like dropping girls from houses that wanted them back, not giving bids to houses that put them on their bid list. Unfortunately this was especially the case with certain chapters like KKG. Recruitment is a numbers game and it’s extremely difficult to gauge. This year was a bad one, hopefully Panhellenic will do better moving forward.
#2 by: Panhellenic is not fair
I’ve heard the whole “Panhellenic tries to be fair and it’s a numbers game, blah blah blah” bs for years. I’m an alum, and use Greek rank to keep up with how my chapter is actually doing.
The truth is Panhellenic has put a target on kappas back for YEARS. As in 7+ years. Kappa has worked extremely hard to better themselves in the past few years and they were more than screwed over by Panhellenic this year. It’s a heaping load of bs that they’re trying to be fair.
There are numerous alumni who have considered taking action on it this time. Enough is enough.

No single sister, or even group of sisters, knows where someone is on a bid list unless she is the recruitment chair or maybe president. It's a best guess otherwise. If you went to pref, you are somewhere on their bid list, but maybe not in thier top quota list.
Bid matching- if quota is 59, panhel's algorithm goes down KKG's bid list and if the first 59 on their list also list KKG first, then that's their pledge class. If number 2 lists DG first and is also in DG's top 59, and number 60 on KKG's list has KKG first, then number 2 goes to DG and number 60 goes to KKG. And so on, though you can imagine how this gets all sorts of crazy quickly. Everyone hopes it will be a girls first choice, there is never a guarantee, and only two or three people at a chapter know where you are on the list.
Also, PNMs don't drop a chapter. You can list your top # of chapters for each round, but the others are still your back-ups and never actually dropped. Panhel sets strict numbers on how many girls each chapter can invite back each round based on their return rates from last year (how many PNMs they wanted each round who also wanted to return to them), so chapters with high return rates cut more PNMs each round. Adding Theta made them guess how it would effect return rates and skewed it so lower numbers of girls were at some pref parties than in the past which in turn effected how many were on bid lists, and some of the matching, etc. I have a friend at another school that had this problem when adding a chapter to formal last year and it was fixed this year so hopefully Pannel will work it out.
