what really matters in a "rank"

by: vtalumni

As someone who as been in greek life at VT and recently graduated, I've never really understood what the "rankings" that people always talk about are based on. It seems as though these "top tier" sororities are labeled as such because they are "hot", get attention from guys, like to party 24/7, and are apathetic about the true values that really are what make up a sorority (ritual, philanthropy, sisterhood, leadership positions, etc). When did the defining criteria for a "good" sorority become getting the most likes on instagram, having the hottest pictures, and getting the most guys? I think what really makes a sorority "top" or "good" is they're involvement on campus and within their sorority, their passion for each other and their philanthropy, and their ability to see themselves as equal to the rest of the greek community, not above or better than anyone else.
When you graduate, no one cares what sorority you were in or how good, popular, hot they were. They care about you as a person and your character. Don't spend 4 years wishing you were the hot ones or thinking that because you are "hotter" that you are somehow better than the other thousands of girls that are also apart of greek life at Virginia Tech. Be nice, be passionate about the history that you are a part of and make a difference. Love your sisters and love the things that make your sorority what it is. Challenge your sisters to grow and to grow the sorority. Don't talk down on each other, because in reality, many of the sororities that are considered top tier have mean girls and very little involvement.

You sound extremely bitter you were not in a top tier house. Plenty of top house girls aren't hot,nor do they party 24/7, and are very philanthropic. Let's not generalize.

maybe not horrific, but I can see what they're getting at by saying that they're top maybe for not the best reasons. but some girls like that kinda stuff

OP is bitter she was not in a top tier house. Many top houses have amazing philanthropies and sisterhoods. You're out of college so you say. If so, move on from this site.

OP I know you have the right intentions, and we all understand where you’re coming from, but if you really didn’t care/understand about rankings, then why does it bother you? I’m in a lower house, and I kind of saw this as you attacking other sororities. Which isn’t what Greek life is about. You implied higher tier sororities look down on other girls, but isn’t that what you’re doing? You’re no better than the girls you’re talking about by talking this way. Also, there are mean girls and uninvolved girls in EVERY sorority, top, middle, low. There are also nice and involved girls in EVERY sorority, top, middle, low. From all houses, we need less of this talk and more support.
