informal recruitment/cob

by: vt

When does continuous open bidding or informal recruitment occur? Does every sorority do it? Any tips for it would be very helpful! I would just like to know more about the process.

COB is in the fall

Sororities can only do informal recruitment if they haven't met quota, so KD, APhi, DG, and a few others rarely have COB.

the only way to participate in COB is to be recommended by someone who is already in that sorority. if you tell them you're interested she'll most likely invite you to the events, but there's no guarantee you'll get a bid or anything. just be yourself when you're with the girls, and don;t stress about impressing them, what's more important is just forming a bond with the members.

Actually, COB and informal are two completely different things. Informal happens in the fall, as stated above. COB happens the morning of bid day, where if a sorority doesn’t meet quota, they have the option to invite girls who dropped out of formal to join their chapter. COB is actually super common and nearly every sorority does it, but actives are not told if they participated (only recruitment chairs and Panhellenic decide on it) to keep new members from being ostracized for being “leftovers”

you're mixing up COB and snap bids...
COB stands for Continuous Open Bidding, but is typically called informal recruitment, and it's where at a time other than formal recruitment a sorority that didn't meet the quota can add members if they want to
Snap bids occur during formal recruitment, where a sorority offers bids to pnms who would not be given a bid by chapters they listed on their rankings after pref.
