Not sure whether you're a guy or girl, but if you're a girl - HELL yeah. Might as well do informal rush if you're a sophomore, because I don't know a single sophomore who didn't have a hard time with recruitment or were hardly left with choices. Even my Rho Gamma said it was so hard to rush as a sophomore for her. So either do informal rush or work on having an outstanding GPA, because I do know houses that raise the GPA requirement for sophomores. Do that and you might be fine. And if you're a guy, I have no idea how it works.

I transferred in my sophomore year and just went through rush. The only reason I can think of for why it was so hard for me is because it's already hard to rush as a sophomore because you count as 1.5 a person, raised GPA standards, and you barely have any VT credits compared to sophomores who were already here. At my last school I had a 3.9, this last semester I got a 2.9 and that hurt me REALLY BAD during rush. You don't get to have the benefit of an accumulated GPA from an easy freshman year like everyone else. But my friend, same position, had a 3.5 and got the same exact houses back as me. We barely got any houses back after philanthropy round.

That being said, I don't want to discourage you from rush but rather make you prepared for it: have a GREAT gpa. I met some transfers in all of the houses, so it must have worked out for them though it still confuses me how me and 4 different people (all transfers as well) pretty much got the same exact houses back each time. Though I have to say, if I could have done it all over again I would have not wasted my time and done informal rush in the fall. And look at it this way, you'll be in a sorority sooner and it's a great way to start off your life at your new school. Plus formal rush sucks, don't let any girl tell you "you'll end up where you're suppose to be" like it's destiny - there's no way a system based on first impressions and rankings based on GPA and whether you're a sophomore isn't deeply flawed. But it has to be that way because of how many people rush. The reason they say that is because you can always find people you like no matter what house you end up in.

if you're a guy it doesn't matter. You're actually an advantage cuz you probably have a car and you for sure live off campus.
