SigEp is committed to being a different kind of student organization – one that recognizes the importance of the out-of-classroom experience and is committed to making that experience the safest and most empowering part of a college student's life. SigEp is unique in that our organization and all events are substance free by choice and we respect everyone's pronouns. The members feel that the personhood we are constantly striving to build does not require alcohol to exist. The chapter also works to encourage other student organizations toward eradicating dangerous, illegal alcohol consumption and policing microaggressions and toxic masculinity.

Others are playing checkers while SigEp plays chess. Keep in mind is that most undergraduates that live in fraternity homes are under age (over 90%). Unfortunately, alcohol has become a central focus of fraternity life on campus here in Austin as well as nationwide and SigEp wants to demonstrate clearly that our priorities lie with preparing young college men to become confident, values based leaders. SigEp offers the leadership WE NEED NOW.

SigEp's Balanced Man Program (BMP) is structured to enable leaders and members to hold other members accountable. One of the outcomes of our chapter adopting the BMP is that members are more likely to not offer bids to prospective members who express highly social interactions that involved alcohol. As prospective members who want primarily social aspects of membership are less likely to return for follow-up events, the men who do return show greater interest in campus involvement and leadership through the Balanced Man Program. The recruitment process with the BMP is far more like a job interview where the members were encouraging prospective members to tell about their motivations for their undergraduate experience and reasons for personal involvement.
