Pref: Suicide Bidding, The MRABA, Quota Additions

by: What You Need To Know

Happy pref! Here's what you need to know about your options when making your decision tonight...

Single Intention Preference (Suicide): Only do this if you would rather not been in Greek Life than the one house you are putting down. If you only went to one house for pref this does not apply to you. You are also limiting your chances of getting your top house when you do this. Why is that? Because of quota additions.

Quota Additions: You are told to maximize your potential for a reason. If you are low on both your top and second choice houses bid list you will automatically be placed on the bid list of your top choice house. You will never know this was the case, nobody in your pc will know, and only a few members of your chapters exec and panhel will know this is the case. The process will always favor those who are more open. Houses do not "drop" girls after pref, everyone invited back for pref is someone they want in the chapter. The chapter will order every single pnm and then be matched via pnm preference until the pledge class is full.

MRABA: The MRABA feels scary but this is what you should know; you CAN rush again if you are unhappy with your house and drop before initiation. What you cannot do is COB - The purpose is to prevent girls from accepting a bid at one house, getting poached (essentially) by another house, then dropping and switching houses just because you feel like it. But you can always rush again next fall as long as you're not initiated.

+ A note on COB - Every year so many girls drop thinking COB is how they'll get the house they want and very rarely that is the case. Do what you want, but COB is never guaranteed, sometimes not advertised, and you should not spend your freshman year focused on networking your way into a cob bid. If you were invited back for pref someone fought to get you there, you are someones rush crush, and they are going to be excited to have you there tomorrow!

How many girls are invited to each house’s preference night? Trying to bank my odds of a bid to my clear first choice house.

Is it 2x the number of girls they will take, or less?

I am very mixed on the other house I preffed tonight.

Depends on the house and how their return rate is historically + how it’s been this week. Pi Phi will have less girls for pref because they know the majority will rank them #1 vs. Tri Delt will have more pref parties and a longer bid list because it’s harder to know where girls who go there for pref will end up if that makes sense?

This is so helpful! I've heard a few girls say that the person they spoke with today at a house during pref said, "I really hope to see you tomorrow". If you didn't hear that from your top choice, should you be concerned?

Given what you are saying, should I not have tried hard in the house I didn't want to today in hopes they'd rank me low and I'd end up getting my first choice?

They’re not supposed to say “See you tomorrow” because it’s considered bid promising (the chapter can get a fine if a rho gamma heard) but girls slip up and it happens, everyone is human. Don’t freak out bc your recruiter didn’t say that to you, they’re just following the rules it has nothing to do with you!

And honestly idk I’ve never heard of girls bombing their second house to get placed low on their list. Each house is different in how involved members are in the order of the bid list, and your convo during pref isn’t the only factor (you’ve had a few different convos over the past few days that all matter!). If you really do not like your second house there’s a chance your recruiter could tell your heart wasn’t in it vs. someone who really does want to be there tho. You also never want to be rude to recruiters during parties and risk being removed from the process for conduct!

You shouldn’t have to try at either house. If you have to try and keep trying, that’s going to get exhausting really quick!

Please give your second choice a chance if that’s what you get. It might just be the best thing to happen to you! Iykyk
