joining a sorority as a poc?

by: poc

i never see people of color on the sorority instagrams. I don't mind being the odd one out but I do mind racism, have there been any problems with racism within the houses?

I agree-as an incoming freshman I am finding it really hard to believe there are POC in every house based on their Instagrams. There appears to be little to no diversity in some houses(?)

every sorority has poc and if you’re in greek life at boulder you know a poc in every house Instagram just isn’t a good way to get to know a house before recruitment lol

I’m not a POC but I am a member of greek life and I would say go with your gut. You want to be in a house where YOU feel comfortable, race aside, and you are your own best advocate and are the only person who can judge where you will be comfortable within the sisterhood.

Agreed. I know PNM's aren't suppose look at Instagram, but I see literally no POC in some houses. And if there are POCs in every house, it appears that certain houses do not want to promote their diversity.

It could be the case that these sororities dont "promote" their diversity as they dont want to be seen tokenizing their POC. People are very open minded at cu and wouldnt want to seem like they view their diverse members as recruitment pieces

Okay, I could see not wanting to tokenize a POC, but you can scroll through years of photos for some houses and not see a single member that is a POC, is overweight, disabled, LGBTQ, etc. Literally years and years of pics. What are the odds?

if you watch @alextrainer on tiktok, she is a black woman and former member of alpha phi who made a short video about why she dropped because of how much racism she experienced in her sorority (scroll all the way to beginning of her page)

Pi Phi for one is making an effort to be more inclusive. There is a great article you can google called "Pride in Myself and Pi Beta Phi"

I’d say that because Greek life is historically white, it tends to attract white people, and honestly create an environment that is even more white than the CU population at large. I’d say at CU the more “lower tier” a chapter is, the more diverse it is (I think tier designations and diversity are correlated here but that’s another story).

the lower tier houses tend to have the most diversity in terms of POC and also girls with all different body types. they are lower tier not because of anything they did, they are great girls, but because they are considered unattractive at CU. the frats don’t want to do mixers with them and it’s cruel. the houses with all the discrimination/slurs/racism scandals are the top tier ones and some mid tier ones have had some too, but the top are FILLED with them it’s soooo common. when the top tier houses do accept girls that don’t fit their typical perfect barbie mold, they don’t post them on their instagram. notice how they just post the same girls with huge followings over and over??
