should i even bother?

by:

Hello! So, I am a first year thinking of doing spring recruitment at a sorority, but I've been hearing a lot about how competitive it is. Should I bother going through with it, or should I just wait until next fall? I know people say go just to make friends, but honestly, it sounds pretty awkward to meet someone, get dropped from their sorority, and then see them in classes/on campus.

I think that you shouldn't rush until fall semester, only because there's less sororities doing spring rush. if you go through fall rush, you'll have more options and i personally think that you'll be closer with your pledge class. but if your main concern is that it's going to be awkward, don't worry it won't as long as you don't like blatantly seem hurt or whatnot.

Thanks for the reply! My problem is that I like some of the sororities doing spring rush (they all seem pretty ok to me), and I want to get involved as soon as possible, but I'm worried I'll just be wasting my time due to the small number of bids given out. Anyway that's a good point and thanks for the advice!

I did Spring Rush as a first year last year and it was the best decision I've ever made! I'd go for one of the houses that are taking more springee's than other houses, just because you'll get the whole "pledge class" experience. If you don't get a bid, don't sweat it. You probably won't see those girls much on campus/ in class, and they'll have interacted with so many people during rush that they probably won't remember you

I would just go for it. Going through rush as a sophomore is kind of hard because of quotas

I would say just go for it! It's really not that awkward because there are a lot of girls, and it's inevitable that people will be dropped. Spring is a bit competitive because of limited bids, but rushing as a Sophomore will be hard. Unfortunately, most houses will want to fill their quotas with freshman, so I would expect about half the houses to drop a lot of sophomores on the first day.

I also did spring rush last year and had a great experience. Spring is a little competitive, but so? Rushing as a sophomore is competitive. I was unsure of the house I ended up in, but decided to give it a shot (which I would highly advise), and ended up finding a great sisterhood-- cliche as it sounds. Just go in with an open mind, knowing that sometimes in the spring there are 80 girls showing up for a handful of spots, and go to as many houses as you can (the one thing I regret about not doing in the spring). Especially for house tours! Good luck!

If you know you like some of the chapters having Spring Recruitment events, there's no harm in going to a few events and seeing what you think! If you find a chapter you like, then great. Just remember that you are not guaranteed a bid like you would be during Fall Formal Recruitment and that all of the chapters going through recruitment have a different number of available spots. But there's no harm in giving it a try.

To my knowledge, the chapters with open events for Spring Recruitment are Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Sigma Kappa, and Zeta Tau Alpha. Event-hopping is usually pretty doable if you want to go to a few and see what you think, but I wouldn't try to go to more than three chapters to guarantee the sisters get to know you. Best of luck!
