spring rush advice

by:

I was dropped from a house I wanted to join when I was rushing during Fall... Would it be weird to go back?

I felt really connected to the girls but wasn't called back. I've talked to a couple of girls from that house and told them that I really wanted to be part of that house but that I didn't make it (which then makes the conversation super awkward)

Any tips on what to say or something? I know it's a mutual selection process but I really thought they liked me ...

This hasn't happened to me but I can totally sense your thoughts... I'm a freshman girl so I wouldn't really know that much about it. But here are just some of my brutally honest thoughts:

If they really did like you, wouldn't they have called you back? You definitely could try again and maybe get in, but there's always the weight of remembering that you weren't destined to be in the sorority. They might even just accept you out of pity. If that doesn't matter to you, then go for it!

Personally, I would just feel a little self-conscious about the whole thing. I doubt that they just "forgot" to accept you. There must have been some sort of reason behind it. Are you sure that this is the right sorority for you? None of the others stood as much of a chance?

Sorry if this was too honest/mean. :/

Oh and one more thing. If you talked to some of the girls, they should have been able to pull strings or at least encouraged you to try again. I've heard of girls being added anytime during the semester because they knew girls already in the sorority. Some sororities accept girls anytime during the semester.

No worries about sound mean or harsh. I've thought about it too and felt the same way. Why go back when they didn't call me back. The girls I've talked to are random people I see wearing sorority letters and just stumbled upon to make small talk with them.

I felt really comfortable in that house, taking into consideration that I suck at small talk. It was all good until the day before bid day. Then again I'm gonna try it out perhaps even Greek life isn't meant for me :) thank you for your honest words!

Do not be hard on yourself about thinking that they liked you or what not. When I rushed Fall, I was dropped by a house I knew A LOT of people in and they were all pretty surprised when I told them I was dropped by their house. Of course it'll be a little awkward, but most of the members don't really know how girls are selected. How much your friends like you does not correlate on whether you get a bid or not.

I ended up dropping rush due to financial reasons, but a lot of the girls in the system are incredibly nice and once you get past the initial awkwardness of admitting you were dropped from their house, are very welcoming. I've been able to go to invites, guest meals, study sessions, etc. with girls from all over :)

I would suggest to leave all expectations behind, and give as many houses as you can a try. Remember, there are usually only 5-10 bids per house, so it'll be competitive, but it's worth it to just take an hour or two out of your day to meet some new people.

Thank you! :) will do. I'm just trying it out again. I think that Fall rush was a bit too overwhelming for me having just moved across the country and being out of my home state for the first time and all.

Thank you again for your kind and wise words :) <3

A ton of times girls get blocked in or out because of scores but it's not totally personal - especially in the first few days. So don't trip! If you really vibe with some of the girls and especially get a good group when talking to people in the spring it shouldn't be an issue - honestly don't even bring it up because they might not even remember

I would go through, but don't get too hung up on that house. Since it's a guaranteed bid campus, I assume you dropped out of recruitment when you didn't get into the "one". As someone who almost did the same thing I would advise you to give the other houses a second look. They didn't forget to accept you... it might just be a numbers thing, but it's possible it's not.

It won't work for everyone, but I ended up really happy in the house I got a bid from, even though it wasn't my first, or second choice. It sucked the first few days feeling like no one wanted me, but I got over myself and tried to make the most of it (half ass planning to drop rush again the next fall). Before long I realized I really really liked it, and ended up staying. I'd go to a couple houses during spring, not just that single one. You might be pleasantly surprised.

as a past recruitment counselor, I will say with confidence that at some point, recruitment is a total crapshoot. If there is a chapter that does particularly well and had very few potential new women try to drop them forever, they are forced to drop a lot of girls whom they might have really liked just because they're only able to have a certain number of women come back to them. I know girls in my house who have been incredibly sad to find out that someone they met during recruitment wasn't invited back, so it's incredibly likely that you not getting invited back doesn't mean the girls you met didn't like you. It depends on so, so, many things, including sheer dumb luck.

So feel free to give them another try, but don't get your hopes too high. If it works out, then great, but there's always a chance that it might not, particularly because you aren't guaranteed a bid from any chapter during spring recruitment. Just keep an open mind and give a few other chapters a chance too if you want to rush.
