Nobody ever said that hazing was the only way to build brotherhood, it just happens to be the traditional way to do so and is an effective way. Greek organizations are defined by their traditions, both on a national and on a house level. The hazing traditions of a specific house are one aspect of what bonds all of the men that have joined that house together. A new initiate can talk to an alum of 15 years ago about some of the experiences they have both had while pledging and have an instant connection. Now, the reason that hazing, specifically, is a rather effective means for having men bond is that often the hazing is not like how you read in that rolling stone article. My organization would never make our pledges vomit on one another, as there is no point to that. However, there is a point in making a pledge class build something together that makes the house better. There is a point in making pledges work out together. There is a point in having pledges do scavenger hunts

All of those sorts of activities test the mental and physical strength and resolve of a man. If a man doesn't know how to make something with his hands, he should learn-as that is a basic skill most men should have. If a man isn't physically fit, he should work out. Also, a young man who is fun should also be willing to do ridiculous things with his friends on occasion. And if he has trouble with any of those activities, he should have friends encouraging him on, a support system if you will. Now, I will readily admit that hazing may not be the best system for having a group of young men bond, but let me reiterate that it is the TRADITIONAL system. Greek organizations are what they are because of their traditions. Accordingly, since hazing works and is the tradition of fraternities, it will continue.

I agree with hazing to a point. I think you need to have that barrier between the brothers and the pledges so that the pledges know what they are working for, and would do whatever it takes with their bros to cross. it teaches you that if you give your respect and work hard, you will be getting that respect once you cross. Also, pledges need to drink quite a bit so that they can handle themselves, and work out a lot so that they are fit and make the frat look good. its stupid to beat your pledges though or to make them throw up on eachother. you should be able to command respect without having to do that

youre right. we should haze them as hard as possible, have every pledge except one or two drop, and then bond with those two guys that actually cross when we are making the next pledges throw up on each other and elephant walk.

Last I checked, Fiji, Zete and SAE each crossed more than 10 guys last semester and the one before that too

People should not be using this website in deciding where to rush. What separates SAE (62%), which is a top house, from TKE, which is 11th on this list, is only 2.5%. These rankings mean nothing. If you're a fool and decide to believe these ratings and rankings, at least take away the fact that all these houses are pretty much the same. Some girls love a particular house. some girls dont. Some houses haze. Some don't. Theyre all pretty close together.
