all the sororitys doing spring rush + perspective

by:

The other post was taken down because it contained individual names. Listed are all the sororities participating in spring recruitment, however Zeta Tau Alpha, Gamma Phi Beta, and Alpha Chi Omega are the only ones listed on PHC holding formal events (this mainly has to do with the budget, national's etc., not a house's selectivity). For the other sororities, contact them DIRECTLY and express interest.

AXO: This is a great group of inclusive girls and a really fun house. They are considered by many to be the "counter-culture" sorority because many don't fit the typical sorority mold. Many girls are big on activism, sustanability, etc. but then again, not all. They are considered a lower tier house, HOWEVER, AXO, like all sororities are only getting stronger due to larger amounts of girls rushing. They have consistently maintained a strong presence on campus and aren't going anywhere. Solid house. You'll get plenty of bids to mid/lower frats. but these girls don't go out as much as other sororitys.
ZTA: This is Cal's newest house, but they were charted in 2012 before any of us were even students at Cal so this doesn't really matter anymore. This house bounces between mid and lower mid depending on who you are asking but slowly climbed its way to become a solid and established house on campus. Like AXO they aren't going anywhere and its a great group of girls but ZTA is slightly higher and has better frat relations in my opinion as they go out more often. They too get bids to mid and lower mid houses. Their weakness is that it can be seen as a relatively divided house: partiers and a quieter bunch. BUT: this means you'll fit into at least one of them. You'll probably feel less involved if you go out less, but hey, academics are important too and you always have the option to go out.
DELTA SIGMA: THIS IS A LOCAL CHAPTER. While you can join Greek Life as a local chapter and still have a great experience this is something you MUST keep in mind. Pros are that there is no national oversight (more leniency and flexibility but a con is that there is no national oversight (who's funding events? alumnae relations? etc.) This house is also lower mid and has been since they were AOPI. Great group of girls, but many dropped when they lost their letters and this house lost its uniformity, having had to take in members last year separately from fall formal. I believe they still have the same frat relations, but this house is relatively divided because of their local chartering. Unlike ZTA, this division btw old/new members weakens the house imo. That being said, you can still have a great time in this house. You'll probably get to live in and they have the nicest house in my opinion. Also, many members were around when it WAS AOPI, so you'll still get a sorority experience, there are just more caveats
CHI OMEGA: Like delta sig, this house lost a LARGE amount of its members last year when their inappropriate finsta was leaked. First and foremost, this speaks of the culture of the house to some extent. HOWEVER, this house has changed significantly since they lost so many girls. Its now a little more divided in terms of its members but they are doing a great job at keeping up their relations and presence on campus. They exchange with mid tier frats and get plenty of bids. BUT... they are under close watch from nationals following what happened. they're not leaving campus anytime soon, but this will impact your experience to some extent.

GAMMA PHI BETA: This house has not been performing well in recent years and had to drop out of Fall Formal 2017 recruitment because their pledge class wouldn't have been big enough. Many of these girls "never saw themselves joining a sorority" and theyre more academically focused and lower tier because of this, their relations with frats, as well as more superficial reasons. I'm unwilling to say their shortcomings are only because of looks because PNM's just haven't been resonating with them and there are plenty of other "bottom" houses doing just fine. These girls are very nice. Some party, some dont BUT I would highly advise against joining this chapter as its too much of a risk. If they don't meet quota, they'll likely leave campus and if you pledge, you can't ever join another sorority.

How about instead of bashing certain houses you should try to promote each place equally. How would you know if one house or another is bound to fail? For all I know it’s people like you that are the reason some of these houses find it difficult to get back up. Unless you are part of all these houses maybe you should check yourself. I think the point of spring rush and having different choices is for PNMs to see where they are most comfortable at and not to be prejudice because of attention seekers like you who are feeding into this gossip and posting anonymously to promote whatever agenda you are trying to fulfill.

This is not and has never been about bashing a house. This is about being informed. Imagine joining a sorority that loses its letters next year and not being able to rush another or be involved in Greek life because you already pledged. I wish all houses the best of luck, but there’s a difference between highlighting a houses strengths and ignoring shortcomings because you’re trying to promote an “inclusive” system. There’s nothing inclusive about a system that’s not help accountable.

The problem with posts like these is that they hurt gamma phi's chances of recruiting well despite intentions. Yes everyone knows that gamma phi is struggling at the moment however have you ever stopped to think that maybe if you would have described gamma phi beta's strengths instead of their momentary weaknesses then more girls would join therefore strengthening their place on this campus and improving the chapter's health as a whole. It's a cycle, the more you talk about gamma phi in a negative light, the less women will rush them, the faster they'll be run off campus because it's impossible For them to combat all the stigma that's been attached to their house for years. So how about instead of slamming them, we support them when they so obviously need it.

@k if their nationals wanted to pull their charter, they would've done it last fall when they withdrew from recruitment but they didn't suggesting that maybe you're not as informed as you think you are. The fact that they're still here after fall makes me think they have a plan to strengthen their house but again posts like these and many of the other sometimes horrible posts on this site will only enforce the cycle.

Retweet Phclove. Gamma Phi is in rebuilding mode and to any PNMs reading this think about how that can benefit you and allow you to shape your experience. Obviouslys gphis nationals supports their chapter here at Berkeley rather than want to shut shut it down. Also to K why don’t you think about the FFR process and the mindsets of PNMs coming in. They aren’t interested in becoming a Panhellenic sister they are interested in be in xyz top house. Imagine if you were gamma phi and had to fight every stereotype PNMs have heard as soon as they walk through the door. Over a third of people who start FFR drop out and that says something in itself. It’s not gamma phi doing something wrong, they’re just like any other sorority, it’s the larger Phc community. I mean look at how many housing are recruiting this spring... it’s more than it has been for YEARS. These houses couldn’t live with being 10 under campus total and hold out on recruiting in order for gamma phi to have a better chance at being successful. In reality there’s hardly any actual phc love on this campus and that’s quite sad.

This is as honest and well-rounded of an account I could provide. I am not in one of these chapters but in a sorority that has had to participate in Spring recruitment in the past and want to help out all the confused PNM's who have been failed by our system and PHC who doesn't advertise Spring recruitment well at all. ALL houses who do COB should be required to list their chapter as participating in my opinion. Then, they can be as selective as they want. But the lack of transparency undermines the system. Spring rush has nothing to do with a chapter's rank anymore. Plenty "bottom" tier houses are not recruiting, and there are undoubtedly top houses doing it in private. Props to ZTA, Gamma Phi, AXO, Delta Sig, and Chi O for actually announcing spring rush--especially AXO and ZTA for holding events.

This is good. Accurate and I agree with the comment on PHC. They need to institute a better system for spring recruitment. Girls are going to rush in the spring and houses will need to recruit in the spring regardless of whether or not Fall formal is the “ideal” rush experience.

I would add that Delta Sigmas recent pledge class is pretty consistent with their past ones, Zeta’s last 2 pledge classes is more of a middle tier than bottom tier vs their older members but still some mix, AXO is more mixed/variable than ZTA but still getting stronger, and Chi Omegas recent pledge class (still good group of girls but less consistent) is weaker than it used to be but will hopefully bounce back next fall. Gamma Phi had no pledge class.

PNM’s : KEEP IN MIND PLEDGE CLASSES because these members are the future of a chapter.

Of course, actually going to these sororities and interacting with members is what’s most important and will speak way louder than any post on this site, but hey, while you’re here...

The Chi Os I've met are pretty cool and chill. If this is what their new house will be like, I think it's off to a great start!

Good luck to all PNM’s and good luck to Gamma Phi! This system is stronger when we’re all informed and the OP has a good overview of each house. As someone who’s been in Greek like for three years already, this post is spot on!

Just beacause someone pledges a sorority doesn't disqualify them from
dropping and joining another. It is only if you are initiated that
you cannot join another. There is a HUGE difference!

my friend has pledged 3 and dropped every time. she know thinks its funny and plans to do it again senior year...

I think the main thing is just to keep in mind that if you join and are initiated you can’t ever join another chapter. I know plenty of girls didn’t know this beforehand.

why isnt tri delt also participating? people always rank them below some of those other houses like xo and i thought only lower houses did spring recruitment?

By: tri delt?
by: ?

tier really has nothing to do with who does spring. it's about house total (how many people have dropped, size of pledge classes)

if lots of girls are dropping or you didnt get that big of a pc doesnt that mean your chapter is weaker? (this isnt meant disrespectfully.. I'm generally curious)

A lot of it is dictated by Nationals. More members = more money
