spring rush

by:

Hey everyone! I am asking around if anybody knows what sororities are Berkeley will be having Spring Rush this year. I am a freshman and went through Formal Recruitment in the fall but felt very overwhelmed with the first week of classes and wanted some time to see if being in a sorority would be something I wanted to do at Berkeley before committing myself to it. I dropped after the 3rd day. Now that I have had time to explore Berkeley I know that is definitely something I want to be a part of and just wish I knew this during the fall since all the houses were participating. Many people I've talked to have told me to wait until sophomore year but I really want to live in a house next year as a sophomore, so I was just going to ask around whether anybody knew what houses would be doing spring rush based on pledge classes? The two I clicked with most were ADPi and Chi O.

We wont know who's participating until spring but keep an open mind with the sororities that are doing it and give them a clean slate when you meet them. In the mean time make sure you keep your grades up and try to get to know some women in all the chapters on campus.

Keep in mind its going to be hard for you to live in your sophomore year since housing is competitive and you'll be a semester behind on points. Most sororities base housing off of a points system and whoever has the most can live-in. This might not be the case with every house, but if Adpi and Chi O were your favorites just know they have some of the smaller houses on campus (this is not a bad thing and they both have beautiful houses) which would mean you likely won't get priority your sophomore year.

I'd keep your options open. Keep in touch with people in the system so you'll know if and when chapters are going to be inviting up PNMs. Plan to do fall formal rush in case COB/Spring informal rush doesn't come through for you. Be prepared for the possibility that the chapters you like most may not immediately have room for you to move in, and consider your priorities carefully.

I'd never dismiss a chapter out of hand just because they weren't my top choice during fall rush (initial impressions don't always hold up), but I'd strongly caution anyone against making a decision based on better move-in prospects, especially when all options aren't concurrently on the table.

While this is not always the case, understand that empty space in a house can sometimes indicate chronic recruitment problems in the chapter. It can also mean more room choice and a better chance of getting a single as a non-senior, too, but proceed with caution anyway.
