why does ranking here matter?

I'm not saying that rankings at other schools don't exist, but why is it so toxic at Cal? I have friends in Greek life at Cal Poly, SCU, USC, UCLA & more and rankings, while present, don't seem to play as big of a role in what houses girls pick. Nor do houses routinely tear eachother down. Ranking posts are hardly ever posted as much as this school. All these schools seem to have Greek communities a LOT stronger than cal, which is hilarious considering how much people here care.
Thoughts welcome, also just needed to throw this out there.

Because most ppl at Cal were social outcasts and nerds in high school.
Because most people in the top sororities/frats at this school would be in bottom ones at another school.
So they hold onto whatever semblance of social dominance they have and make a huge deal over whose the most popular and hot and whatever when in reality everyone here is a nerd and this system is barely what you could call "greek"
