is it just me or did bottom houses do better than top

by:

Okay, I feel like we've gotten a fairly good look at pledge classes lately, and is it just me or did a lot of top houses disappoint? Like ALL of them.

Pi Phi, Adpi, Kappa, and Alpha Phi all have a mixed bag of girls from what I've seen at game days and on social media.

Tri delt, ZTA and hell even Delta Sigma did better than I expected.

I'm NOT saying these bottom houses are higher than top houses, but in terms of recruitment it seems that bottom houses did better than top ones who disappointed.

Opinions on what this means for the future rankings?

I think 10 years from now most houses will wish they are DS with no crazy national to take their money and add nothing to the chapter. The times they are a'changing. PNMs were smarter this year vs 2016 where PNMs bailed after 2 rounds of cuts. Maybe if we get 5 more years of increasingly smarter PNMs things might be better. Or maybe not if we lose more houses. 2 already on probation and GPhi a total question mark.

Agreed. Good post without bashing any of the houses! Thanks!

It may also materialize that increasingly smarter PNMs will see the bad in NPCs as you do and fail to complete formal recruitment, leaving tiny new member classes of 5-10 women. NPC groups would then be leaving campus. That would certainly be a trip back to the late 1960s/early 1970s when many Cal sororities temporarily left campus and/or pledged extra small classes. If memory serves the smallest NPC presence we had during that timeline was three official chapters.

DG did good Chi O didn't mediocre. Tri delt Zeta AXO and DS all did surprisingly well, esp DS and zeta who pulled in some hot girls this fall. I still expect both to do spring rush because Zeta is new and DS is local and will probably see more girls drop. Looks like the system is evening out and I could not be happier.

Also best of luck to GPB we all need to support them. Go to their philo events, exchange with them, etc. How'd you feel if your house were falling apart bc of a website and ranking system as stupid as this one. We go to cal get it together

It's obvious you're basing this off of social media which is misleading. Only way to actually tell will be after philo and more exchanges/invites/parties. If I'm not mistaken only GPB and zeta have had their invites.

DG is about to be flushed down the drain by their national and is on probation. Nobody is safe from their crazy nationals. The situation seems to be getting worse with alot of rocky and fractured relationships. We were told the other day to watch our 'tone' as it was being perceived as 'disrespectful'. Whoever on this site in another thread said that these houses are not run as a democracy was correct. Lenin and Stalin could have learned a few things from my national! Its totally grim, grim, grim and that's a good day.

This year's Cal sorority targets are XO and DG. Hat pick for Spring 2018.

Any house on probation has a target on their backs and could be shut down whenever. I hope DG can weather the probation storm but they are in a tough spot. But its the XO situation that has been questionable from day 1 when they did membership review. I think I have much more respect for the nationals that simply shut the house down after membership review rather than simply trying to fix the problem as the 'fix' seems to simply cripple the house morale and culture. If I had to draw a cartoon of the house that loses members to 'membership review' I think it would be of some poor animal that has been hit by a truck on the road and is simply gasping for air and trying to stay alive. The problem is that the animal is breathing its last breaths of air and will be dead shortly. I feel quite sorry for the people that are in XO as how do you bring back a house that has essentially been horsewhipped? I think it was financial greed that kept the house open pure and simple and that is truly pathetic but I don't think most of our nationals are frankly any different. Its all about the $.

@sadbear: You underestimate lifelong sorority experience and the good alumnae women within any NPC org (bottom, mid and top groups) who will move heaven and earth to assist collegians. Collegians who do not value the experience and wisdom of those in their NPC group who have been initiated before them may desire disaffiliation. I think you understand the true mettle of strong NPC women who value their friendships and sisterhood enough to move carefully but swiftly beyond and above any alleged crises or roadblock in their purview.

@sadbear. Interesting and highly amusing response. Thank you for a good laugh. Contrary to your so silly assumption, I don't in any way underestimate the power of lifelong membership given that I am now the 4th generation of my family to be involved in the system. I would never have joined an organization if I didn't believe in lifelong membership. Sadly though you sound like yet another of the apologists for the national organizations that have their heads in the sand and seem to be trapped in the middle/dark ages on any number of issues, social and otherwise. My favorite line of yours was about the 'Alumnae moving heaven and earth' to assist collegians'. Ha. In my experience with some of these 'well meaning folk' its all about beating the current generation into submission/compliance and has zero to do with understanding or making any attempt at flexibility or anything so radical as evolution (god forbid). I value lifelong membership but if history teaches us anything it is that systems must adapt and evolve or fear extinction. Sadly I see little evidence of evolution in the greek community and what makes me sad is that more and more schools will move away from Greek life over time for a variety of reasons. Sure disaffiliation is an option for any member at any time and over this past year I know many have considered this a viable option for a host of reasons. All I know is those nationals stuck in the 1950s risk much in terms of the longevity of their organizations. For myself I can say I have a healthy fear of our national but I in no way respect them. I don't think my view is that unusual and organizations based on fear and intimidation usually can last quite a long time unfortunately. I am not sure what our system wide drop rates are going back in time but it seems at least recently that many more people aren't buying the value of 'lifelong sisterhood' and see the nationals as adding little value and simply being money grubbing vampires. Why not just call these organizations businesses and at least be honest about what they are and are not?

You, as a self-proclaimed 4th generation sorority initiate (or did you join a cult? you seem to strongly believe fear and intimidation exist within NPC groups), need to follow your own typed advice by getting the heck out of your greekrank funk and showing living/breathing Cal students the beauty and necessity of NPC organizations (again, cults? your choice to type about alleged fear and intimidation factors) to which you and your family have steadfastly pledged your oaths (given your blood? sacrificed your first born? same reason).

Regardless of how "top" or "bottom" houses did we need to support our fellow houses on probation because we cannot afford to lose anymore houses to rankings or nationals. Everyone joined a house to have a group of friends/community and when that is threatened it sucks. You don't need to add fuel to the flame

Losing sorority houses to rankings? That's giving poor sites like greekrank too much credit and intelligent students at Cal not enough credit.
