junior transfers are not welcome

by: Jt

As a transfer and seeing a lot of posts about how houses love transfers I decided it would be a good idea to rush and I met some other transfers as well. On sisterhood day I got dropped by 8 houses, the 3 I felt very uncomfortable returning were on my schedule. I wasn't the only one who felt like this. I talked to a lot of other transfers I met who said the same thing. They walked out of the houses confident that it was amazing and that they would be invited back but were cut, while the houses that were not nice or awkward were the ones that were on their schedule. I know that it's a numbers game but please don't encourage transfers to rush and have a good chance at enjoying rush when it's clearly just for freshman. Other transfers had only 5/10 houses scheduled for house tours and I feel very upset by this. I feel like had a rushed as a freshman I could've actually really enjoyed rush but this was traumatizing as its rejection after rejection even though I thought the conversations went great. Trying to pull through to at least tomorrow but this is crushing me and making me so sad because I had such high hopes that I would fit in and love rush

I wouldn't blame your situation on being a junior transfer as that's just not accurate. I rushed as a junior transfer and had a mostly full schedule throughout rush week. On the other hand, freshman that I know had a schedule similar to yours. It's a difficult process for everyone.

I feel you frustration and pain and I'm truly sorry you've had the experience you have had. In part because of last fall we had more than expected upperclassmen come through recruitment and its made it very competitive at ALL the houses. Every house is slightly different in terms of upperclassmen this year based on their composition (my house might get 1-3 upperclassmen-that's it!). I know this is of little consolation based on how you are feeling now but based on what you said you do have options and that is fantastic. Reading your story I actually think it sounds like you have done well because you have options. I know for fact that some freshman now DO NOT HAVE AN OPTION for tomorrow. The fact that you are an upperclassman and a junior at that and have options is a testament to the fact that you have done well. Cal is unique in that a junior transfer can go through and have options. Most other systems wouldn't have options for juniors. I know you are sad but our system does welcome upperclassmen to recruitment and the fact that you have options is a testament to this fact. The idea that you have multiple options at this stage as a JUNIOR is quite amazing as the odds were crazy this year for EVERYONE! Don't be crushed by this process please. If things don't work out then you might find an option in spring cob but know that your options now will probably be better than spring cob options.

I'm really sorry you had this experience. Rejection is not fun but try not to take it personally. I don't think there's any question some houses prefer younger pledges. And more transparency and information would definitely be helpful.

If you have some other transfer friends or PNMs in the same position, maybe you can try to pledge the same house. Then you would know you'd already have friends in your pledge class. You can still have a great Greek experience. Just decide whatever house you get into you're going to get involved and give it your best effort. You can also always get involved in Panhellenic or with your house's national.
