what are the odds i have no house for pref?

by:

So I only had 2 houses today. How likely is it that I have no houses tomorrow? Does that happen a lot? I feel like it must, since I've (obviously) lost more than 2 houses in every round so far.

Scary I know. But just keep working the options that you have as you only need one house at the end. Have you been working all your available options at every step of the process? If so, just keep going and don't decline any invites.

Yes, I've been maximizing my options the whole time, but that doesn't guarantee me any house for tomorrow or a bid.

The system is designed to provide a bid if you maximize your options. As the other post said, if you didn't decline any invites and if you continue to not decline any invites you will get a bid. If you don't get a bid and you followed the rules then speak with panhel and rc immediately as a mistake is likely.

I need to have a house tomorrow if I want a bid. From the Panhellenic Guide: "So long as you attend all of the parties you are scheduled for and match with at least one chapter on Preference Night, you are guaranteed a bid through the mutual selection process." So if I don't have anything tomorrow it's far more likely that I was deficient than that there was a mistake with the system or something.

Your reading of rule is correct. BUT, you just need ONE house tomorrow and you said you had 2 today. It only takes one house match and you are ok (I'm assuming you are ok with the options you have available). I know the numbers are crazy this year but if for whatever reason you don't get a match for tomorrow please do see your rc and contact panhel. Computers and humans do make mistakes so don't leave the process for whatever reason without checking things out. Best wishes. For what its worth being on the other side of things is honestly hell this year. We have to cut but so many fantastic people have come through. Seriously its a total tear jerker for many of us and I know its rough for you too. Hang in there!

As long as you've gone to all the parties to which you've been invited, and it sounds like you have, I feel pretty certain that you'll have a house tomorrow night. And honestly, all of the houses are great. I applaud you for hanging in there. Recruitment is not for the timid! Try not to worry even though that feels impossible. And if you go to a house on pref night, that means they want you as a sister. Will you plz post back on here when you get an invite? I'm rooting for you!!!

Thanks @itwillallwork out! Just got out of a super emotional house meeting and your encouragement of a PNM gave me strength as well. This process isn't for the weak amongst ANY of us! The emotion is real no matter where you stand in this process. I know we are all suffering from sleep deprivation and excess emotions but I really wonder if there isn't a better way? Its not the time or place to blame but it really feels like our system needs to change AND grow. I have never seen so many amazing PNMs and I could see almost all of them as a sister. I am not sure what the answers are at this point but this level of pain cannot have been what any of us signed up for. I am not alone is this view by a long shot. After going through this process yet another year I honestly think the entire panhel should resign as their leadership has been absent AT BEST.

Thanks Meg! I'm trying to encourage as many PNMs and sisters as I can. Recruitment is tough for everyone but at least this year is almost done. I know how hard everyone is working on both sides. If anyone has any ideas of how to improve the system, let's hear it! In the meantime, it's the best and only thing we've got! Thanks for sharing your side of things too. I think it helps the PNMs understand.

@itwillallworkout, thanks for encouraging everyone! So many PNMs seemed to be stressed about not having a pref option. I haven't seen all the final lists yet to see if this fear is real (don't think it is but who knows) but I do think some brainstorming ought to happen to improve things. We had massive computer issues the other night which made a hard situation virtually impossible. People have been screaming for transparency and honesty in our system for at least 3 years now but we have seen zip. I am honestly in massive pain watching what so many PNMs are feeling now and I truly believe much of it could be reduced with more options. But we can't offer more options without a stronger healthier system. Truly catch-22 and food for thought for evaluation meetings after recruitment is done. I give every PNM that has come through full credit for tremendous personal courage and I for one think you are all heros and winners!

I'm really upset too about PNMs and what they're going through. If they've played by the rules then they should have at least one party for tomorrow night. It makes no sense that some houses have a lot of room and PNMs would be let go. (And someone on the post about junior transfers and another post says some PNMs won't have options tomorrow.)

Something is wrong there. I think at other schools if you go through and maximize your options you're guaranteed a house. Im going to hope it all works out and everyone has at least one house. Fingers crossed.

thanks for all the encouragement but can anyone familiar with the system give me a number? Is it a 30% chance I don't have a house tomorrow? 40? Are there any relevant numbers from last year that I should know about?

I don't mean to discount the positive vibes in the responses but I want to be realistic and not blindly optimistic.

At some schools if you don't have any houses left, I think your RC calls and lets you know. It would really stink to get dressed for pref night, show up, and find you've got nothing. Not sure if Csl does that. Anybody?

And no idea about odds for tomorrow. Sorry!!!

RC's are supposed to call if you don't have a pref option. If you do get such a call please ask your RC to have the situation reviewed by Panhel immediately and also ask if snap bids are going to be implemented at any stage? Not sure what is going on but the cuts required of us have been absolutely brutal. Every house is different so I can't speak for anyone else but what I've seen but so far this year is worse than last year in terms of cuts. Awful situation and credit to PNMs for sticking with it as we all know its rough. Under no circumstance should anyone walk away without a full explanation of their personal situation. For my money I wouldn't even take the story from the RC, I would ask to hear back from panhel or advisor directly as at this point I'm not sure what is going on based on the stories I've heard and the cuts we are being asked to make.

There isn't a probability that anyone can give you right now in good faith and nothing from last year is honestly relevant this year (new game every year). I am not telling this to scare you or encourage you but if you have 2 houses now there is a solid chance you will have at least one tomorrow. No guarantee for sure but going on history for a few years this is generally how it goes. People did go in to pref last year with one house and got a bid. Some people said last year they didn't get a bid after going through pref at one house but I'm not convinced this happened due to anything other than a mistake (or they suicided) which was never checked out by the PNM (at other schools this can happen but I think our system is designed so this doesn't happen). Whatever happens check out your situation with panhel directly and don't simply take what your RC says as law as a mistake could have been made with the lists. Best of luck and hang tight. Post what happens as I'm rooting for you!

Snap bids can be confusing. You can read about them online but definitely nothing to be counted on. Can't give you any advice there. Not sure what Cal does with them. And plz let someone know about your situation because the system needs input or it won't improve.

I respectfully disagree with not checking out your personal situation with panhel if you don't get a pref option or if you go to pref and don't get a bid. We all operate under the principle here that if you maximize options you will get a bid. Snap bids are a way post pref to get bids to people that might not have been paired for any number of reasons. The math gets crazy and I'm not even certain this will be an option this year. The only reason I bring it up is as yet another reason to ask your RC and panhel for clarification of your situation. You never know what happened and how awful would it be if there were a mistake? You owe it to yourself to check out everything. As to be put on the snap list if we are in fact utilizing snaps as in most peoples view its better to get a snap bid than have to wait for COB or next fall. Also most (not all) COB here is of the secret variety where you have to know someone. So, its not really open COB. This secret COB discussion is chatter for another day as I just would like to encourage you to do the best with whatever your current situation is.

Sorority recruitment nationwide can always be described as a somewhat stressful, teary, bizzare situation for both pnms and initiated sorority members.

Do not feel that recruitment situations you may experience at Cal are never experienced on other campuses in other sorority chapters.

The Cal sorority recruitment situation is magnified here by constant negative (and fairly untrue?) trolling greekrank posts; you must sincerely take everything posted on greekrank with a grain of salt.

by: krn

The trolling on here is frankly minimal. But to dismiss the heartfelt comments of anyone just because you disagree or the comments are perceived as being negative does zero to help us improve our system. Processing 1,000 PNMs is an administrative job, not rocket science. Other schools process double what we do and their recruitment runs like clockwork. People know the rules and people have functioning lists and schedules etc. We have largely failed in an administrative job now for 2 years running. Will anything change? Will we get professional management or people on panhel that take their jobs seriously. Will anyone listen to honest constructive feedback? I am sad to report I doubt it. We have the tendency to cringe and recoil from views that don't agree with ours and have no solid way to moderate differences. Its sad because some houses have amazingly effective administrative operations and so why don't we have the capacity to learn from the people that do things well? We don't or can't and I don't know why. I do know panhel can no longer hide under their desks for 99% of the year when truly their main task is recruitment and yet again they delivered us a mess. Sorry in advance if you don't agree.
