mutual selection and maximizing opportunities

by:

Dear PNMs, the description of 'Mutual Selection' in the 2017 Recruitment Guide is sadly a bit thin in terms of content and substance. If you are committed to having the opportunity to join A HOUSE in 2017 it is important that you understand all the details of the MUTUAL SELECTION PROCESS and what is required from you in terms of how you complete your paperwork each day. If you don't understand or have a question please speak to your recruitment counselor/team/RhoChi as incomplete or improperly completed paperwork can have an impact on your options. This topic is addressed extensively in some very long threads and I think not completely understanding how things work adversely impacted some PNMs last year so I want to make sure everyone fully understands how the process works as its NOT in the recruitment manual.

Thank you! I read the recruitment manual yesterday and am a bit confused about what this means.

I think the bottom lline could be summed up like this -- keep every house you can so you have the fullest schedule possible every day and all your options open. Don't drop a house just because you think you don't like them -- as the week goes on you may decide you like them a lot. And if you do end up with an empty party or more, don't stress! But try to keep the fullest schedule possible and an open mind. :)

Also, I'm not sure, but if you drop houses and end up with a less than full schedule, it may affect the mutual seelection process at the end. So do your part, and keep every house you have the option of returning to!

Also, don't 'suicide' or just pick one house at the end of the week as this means you are not maximizing your opportunities and so if you are not high enough on the house that you are 'suiciding' then you might (most probably based on history) WILL NOT GET ANY BID or have any options (including snap bids etc.). Another way to think of this concept is to play all of your cards (i.e., houses expressing an interest in you) all the way until the end. If you do this there is a very high probability that you will get a bid. If you don't do this you most probably won't get a bid.

To get a bid you have to rank and attend all events where you are asked back. If you just pick one house at the end (aka suicide) and you aren't ranked by that house or ranked highly enough then YOU WILL NOT GET A BID. In the case of suiciding you won't get a bid because you didn't go to ALL the parties that you were invited to (assuming you had 2-3 options by pref and instead of taking them all you just took 1 option). Based on what happened last year with people dropping or suiciding to me the lesson learned is to keep on going and then reevaluate after bids. Everyone has a different POV but many sophomores went through again this year after dropping last year and given the numbers its now pretty competitive to go through as a second year (its doable but competitive). The other thing to keep in mind is that even though you will know more people going through as a second year you are rolling the dice on upperclassmen quota numbers at a particular house. Only you know what is right for you and at Cal we are lucky that its possible to go through as an upperclassmen so know you do have options, its just that they might not be any different than options you have this year and you will miss all the fun of first year! Think about what is best for you.
