2017 changes in phc?

by:

Other posts keep say 2016 FFR didnt go smoothly (pretty terribly it sounds like)! Is PHC making any concrete changes for this fall? Does anyone really know what's going to happen and if not, when are PNMs/everyone going to find out?

It went relatively smoothly- pretty similar to how it always goes. This site just attracts complainers and people who didn't get into their top choices who feel the need to bash every other house as a result. Idk nothing is really going to change so yeah just maximize your options and keep an open mind and everything will work out for you

For what its worth I totally disagree with @Wh comment above. For the most part the comments on here were posted as they happened and I actually sat with people last year back in the dorm as they posted and read their posts aloud. So, don't buy the comments that say everyone on here is a naysayer as that's simply wrong. There were any number of people that weren't happy with their personal results but this seems to be part of the process if you only want 1-2 certain houses. BUT, 2016 PNM volume was unprecedented (see other thread that talks about the specific numbers) and this stressed the process and the system TO THE MAX. DIsorganization ruled the day and panhel was totally unprepared to deal with the aftermath of a process unraveling. I have no idea who the school advisor is but that person should have been FIRED . In my dorm last year it was pretty much tears every night. I know a ton of people will pounce on this comment but it was what I experienced. Of the 10 people on my floor 5 had dropped out by pref which was super sad as they missed out on parties etc. all year long. Some are coming back this fall to go through again so we will see how it goes. I am one of the ones that thought orientation and support from panhel was sorely lacking. I would have been screwed had I not had an older sister at another school to support me through the week. My suggestion is to find a good support buddy for the week and promise to lean on each for the good and bad.

I don't think how FFR went last year was anyone's fault. If you read around, there were just a number of unfortunate or unexpected situations that accumulated to many last minute changes and weird numbers.

1. AOPi was no longer allowed to recruit in FFR. This means 1 house is knocked out where an unprecedented number of girls are registered (over 900 I believe).
--> This year Delta Sigma (formerly AOPi) WILL be able to recruit in FFR!

2. There is no historic data for this many girls, meaning the formulas used to calculate the number of girls each chapter can call back is outdated.
--> We have at least last year's data to help

3. A historic low in drop rates. Percentage-wise, less girls dropped every day. Usually about half the original amount of registration accept bids to houses. Last year I believe it was around 65% accepted bids to houses. This meant the number of parties held within a day was changing at the last second to accommodate for the higher than expected number of girls.
--> Unity Day is now two days and the extra parties are built-in

It's not perfect and PHC is not perfect. I think there are even more girls signed up than last year. BUT if you keep an open mind and focus on meeting the girls in each house, I think you will have a good time :)

I agree with you @k completely WITH THE EXCEPTION that it WAS NOBODY's FAULT. I hate to rant yet again but the complete lack of responsibility taken by Panhel (either publicly or privately) is something that continues to grind away in a very irritating way on my nerves! Your issue #2 was known ahead of time so why the formula's weren't redone to accommodate the situation I have NO IDEA. Many schools in the country have 1,000+ people recruitments and their processes run like clockwork. Why didn't the advisor pick up the phone and call other schools or nationals or SOMEBODY to figure out what the hell to do? We had houses who had no idea what their lists were last year or how many people to ask back and the list of issues goes on and on and on. Poor management full stop. What people lost focus on what that the mismanagement had an impact on PNMs who didn't know details but sensed all was not right with the process. Many PNMs reported that they didn't think their houses wanted them or they were second or third choice etc. What they didn't realize was the pure chaos behind the scenes. Shame on us all that we let our ineptitude result in hurt feelings for something as simple as paperwork and administration. Did the so called ADVISOR or PRESIDENT OF PANHEL offer to resign? Of course not because we live in the land where nobody takes responsibility for anything. So disgusted about this entire situation and I really hope its not going to happen again.

So glad someone has the courage to say some of these things about last year. So far as I can tell it looks like this year is going to be a total repeat on last year. So, PNMs take a breath and realize that not everything will run as expected, there will be chaos behind the scenes and houses will be working around the clock to do their best to welcome you in a kind and friendly manner. We are not perfect, we do get tired, we do have off days but I do believe that most people are doing the best they can. Can we do better? Absolutely and the well run houses reflected on last year and will try to do better this year. Our house is all showing up a week before school starts (some are even coming earlier) to make sure everything will run as smoothly as possible. PNMs, please have patience with us. We realize you are stressed and we promise to try to do the best that we can to make the process run as smoothly as possible.

Take a look at the recently posted recruitment manual and see if you think panhel addressed some of the widely discussed issues from last fall. Trying to keep an open mind I think they tried. My guess is that the exercise in writing the manual was a compromise situation amongst the houses. Some issues got some attention which is a good thing I think. But still very much wish for statement on house/s on probation and more transparency with the statistics. I still don't believe that panhel has a fundamental belief that the people in our system can 'handle the truth' behind the statistics. It will probably be a process over the very long term to improve transparency. Curious what other people think on this topic though.
