chi o - what's the deal?
by: pamI'm an incoming freshman and don't understand whether this house is on probation or not? Will this issue be discussed at orientation or not? I'd heard great things about this house but am not sure what to think at all. Could they lose their charter and then I would be SOL?

Just wanted to share a story about my step-sister who was initiated last year at Miami (Ohio). She just found out that the national (Pi Phi) shut down her chapter. The chapter was on probation when she went through recruitment but she believed that everything would be ok. In total her pledge class spent nearly $40,000 to be initiated and now none of them can ever join another house EVER even though they are just sophomores. She and her entire class are devastated and other than transferring to another school that has Pi Phi they are out of luck for next 3 years. They feel totally betrayed both by the national and the local leadership as while everyone knew the probation was ongoing nobody believed that the plug would be pulled. Keep this story in mind and think about how you would feel if this happened to you. Its an absolutely awful thing to happen to anyone anywhere.

no one really knows what's going to happen. like what happened with aopi you might join then all of a sudden find yourself not in a sorority. if you feel that chi o is a good fit of course join the house but be wary that they're not on good terms with their nationals and anything can happen

Also worth saying that not all of the girls who aren't in chiO anymore were forced to leave. As I understand it, many of them chose to drop with their sisters/in protest of how nationals approached the situation. I think that at least says something about their sisterhood

Will the ChiO officers have the chance to address us at orientation to discuss this issue? I think either they or someone from the group that runs things (panhel?)should talk about the risks or issues surrounding probation. It seems more than a little bit shady not to put the issue in context from PNMs that know very little.

When I went through recruitment, there was no indication of which houses were on what kind of probation, which is unfortunate.
(This is not to throw shade) I know PiPhi last year had either a pre-existing or got into a smaller social probation at the beginning of the school year so they didn't have an invite. Again, not to throw shade, but my friend joined and had no idea until after bid day.
Also slightly unrelated, I know people in ChiO who dropped because they still had to pay full dues (or close to it) if they studied abroad. I also know Zeta requires full dues while abroad. Most, if not all, have dues while abroad but for example my house has a much reduced abroad fee.

So while a a lot of people talk about ChiO's uncertainty, it's also important to note that this isn't the first time this has happended to a Cal chapter. As I understand it, ddd had the exact same thing happen to them a really long time ago and SK almost had to do a membership review but instead changed house culture some years back. This is only what I've heard so I could be wrong, but my point is that trouble with nationals doesn't necessarily mean that their charter is gonna get pulled. I heard chio's nationals will be completely running the show in recruitment and their social presence will also probably be limited, so I think it's safe to say that at the very least it won't be the same ChiO that we're used to. From what I hear, the former two houses went from being top ranking to where they are now and something similar could happen wth ChiO. If you love this house then go ChiO and don't let greekrank comments sway you, HOWEVER aopi got their charter pulled over a stupid financial dispute so if ChiO doesn't clean up their act enough for nationals you could be without a house next year or down the road

I would hate to lose XO from our community and so I hope they can get it together this year. Just a thought but I honestly think it would be a good idea if the President and major officers of the house were allowed to address all the PNMs at orientation this fall to discuss the situation. Such an address would eliminate all the inevitable gossip/heresy that will inevitably follow this story for a long time to come. If the issue isn't addressed directly to the community, I really fear that the house might be shunned due to uncertainty for the future of the chapter which would be a total shame for us all (including the PNMs). I also want to put in a plug for more transparency on the entire issue of probation across the board in orientation. I too was one of the people that learned about this issue the hard way after joining a house last fall and it wasn't the end of the world but it felt a bit shady as I wondered what else I hadn't been told. This wasn't a great way to join a house AT ALL.

Listen pnm I actually know about chi omega's situation and they will definitely not be getting their charter revoked because they are a flagship chapter and their nationals said that they wouldn't do that so if you love chi omega then join it because it has great sweet fun genuine girls who make the best sisters

Don't get downvote as this post was honestly put out there. I just double checked the pi phi website and the chapter was in fact just closed (so, the facts check out). I think we need to be honest about what can realistically happen if you join a chapter on probation. I'm not throwing shade as the XO's have fantastic spirit and have been at Cal forever and I would love to see them here forever. But, it costs alot of money to join a house and to lose your house after just one year truly sucks big time. Just trying to keep it real and not ride my unicorn on a rainbow like so many of the comments on this site!
