sorority time commitment
by: TimeCan anyone comment on the time commitment of being in a sorority? How many hours per day would you say sorority girls dedicate to their sorority? Are there frequent events and meetings?

So I can only speak on behalf of my sorority experience and what sororities do in general. I know some houses require community service hours, mandatory study hours etc. but what I can tell you is that, in general, it's not even a daily a commitment.
In general:
-Monday Night Meeting: 1hour (or 2 if you attend dinner as well)
-Pinning Ceremony: 1hour or less a year/semester depending on if your house does spring COB
-Pre Initiation Ceremony: " "
-Initiation: ~3 hours (mine was longer but this is an average considering each house has different rituals)
-Major Philo Event: ~1.5 hours a semester (most houses I know of require each girl to take on an hour long shift at the minimum at their big events but the .5 is for variation and mandatory fundraising considering it only takes 30 minutes to ask your dad for $100 lol)
-Retreat: ~12 hours a semester (not sure if every house does this, but I know a few that do these sisterhood-buidling all-day Saturday events that might be overnight or in a rented out ballroom)
-Founder's Day: ~2 hours (might have to work a shift or simply attend)
-RECRUITMENT: I can't even approximate the hours being put in, but when you rush think about how long the process takes you as a pnm and then double it for the time commitment of actives.
As a pledge you'll have weekly New Member Education meetings that may replace or be an addition to your Monday Night Meetings and you will not get fined for skipping anything your first semester.

But to reiterate, these are the MANDATORY events. Your sorority will offer you tons of other amazing opportunities to do extra philo with other frats or sororities, both chapter and PHC study hours are available on a weekly basis, big/little week is more fun than it is work, and leadership with added responsibilities will also be made available to you. But all of that is optional! If you want to put in the bare minimum amount of effort and involvement you're looking at about an average of 2 hours a week to avoid fines. Pretty sweet deal in my opinion. And if you do choose to partake in any of the fun opportunities that your sorority and PHC make available to you then your participation will most likely result in Room Draw/House points! You'll learn more about that later, but your points may determine what room in the house you'll get or if you'll live in the house at all. Time commitment is also a great topic of conversation during recruitment, especially if you want to get a feel for what being in each house is like. Hope this helps! :)
