spring rush!!!!

by: springrusher

I'm really interested in doing spring rush. Any word on which houses are doing it? I don't have many friends in sororities, but I'm a legacy at SK and DG.
How do I find out more about spring rush events?
Thanks!

Think about why you want to join a sorority. If its the parties/social scene/really integrating in Greek Life, then Zeta is not right for you. Zeta had 1 exchange last semester (forget about rankings/who, etc). They also had Zero Invites (where sororities rent out clubs in the City, and invite friends/fraternity men). Most sororities have 2 invites a semester, plus a date-party type event, and they have 1-2 exchanges every weekend starting with bid night until dead week. Zeta gets a small amount of slack because its new, and was recruiting for half the semester, but even so, they're not established. They won't be established next semester, or even a year after that. By then, college is half over, and you've wasted time trying to establish something, rather than experiencing something that is established.

Are you joining Greek Life for the connections? Zeta is REALLY strong... In the south. If you're looking to work there, great, they have a strong sisterhood there, and you'll meet great people. There's a reason that the sororities we have before ZTA came are the chapters that are still here: they've been here since they were established. Other sororities have come and go, but the 12 that never were "brought back" (though some did lose/regain their charters) because they are the 12 strongest at Cal. ZTA has 4 chapters in California TOTAL... Most others have between 10 and 15.

Houses doing it for sure: SK, aopi, theta, tridelt, gphib, zeta
Fall recruitment sucked for sororities, in general, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were more houses doing spring rush this year.

Can you explain what you mean by "fall recruitment sucked"? Not a good batch of girls?

fall was weird this year cause the number of girls rushing was super small and then throughout the week many girls dropped my guess is because of all this pledge classes got screwed up and more girls cobed. going through recruitment myself, i was super surprised when some girls were stuck with bottom houses when they seemed super nice and really pretty whereas there were some girls that got top houses that shouldn't be there. idk thats just my opinion but i would say definitely rush, rush week was hell for me but i'm so happy i went through with it

@sad...

You're clearly in gphi or theta or something. A top sorority would NEVER turn down a girl based on their major. I know plenty of science/difficult majors in all of the top sororities (no more or less than theta/gphi).

how dare you make such a claim

I'm a one of the top sororities, hold a position involving education/scholarship and can say that my sorority definitely cuts people based on majors in the fall. How likely is an engineer going to get above a 3.5? How likely is a polisci major? Unless they're a nonfreshman and have proven themselves, we don't take chances. We don't care so much about freshman majors since those change pretty often.

one of my good friends did the whole zeta thing, and while the idea of it wouldn't have been for me even if i wasn't already in a house, i do think you could be a little more fair to them. as far as i've heard they got their stuff figured out, and are going to start doing social and sisterhood-y stuff this coming semester. having done spring recruitment, i guess i'd say try to meet girls from as many houses as you can before the events occur and talk to girls you already met in the fall (assuming you were a fall admit). and yeah, check CalGreeks for info. some chapters will put up info on Facebook as well.

What about DG? They did spring rush last year, anyone know if they will again?

Probably. Most, if not all houses, are going to do spring rush solely because there weren't a lot of girls that went through recruitment this past year. Some will have invite only recruitment: they're only looking to give out 2-6 bids, and don't wanna invest the time/money on a full fledge open recruitment. Its expensive, and takes up a lot of time. They'll just have 1-2 invite only events. ADPi and XO were in this category last year. DG will probably have an invite only recruitment this year. They only had 1-2 girls drop this last semester and probably don't have that many bids to give out.

I agree with a lot of the posters above that say to go to as many chapters as you can, and don't be discouraged because you didn't end up in a "top" house. Seriously, most houses (minus Zeta) provide you the same stuff (though at different prices), and you really don't wanna end up somewhere that doesnt want you. Don't rerush that same house in the Fall/next spring. Its not worth it, and looks sad... At that point you're older, and less valuable anyways. All the transfer students end up in bottom houses anyways.

If "ranking" matters that much to you, then you should really reconsider Greek life: its probably not for you. You don't need to be Greek to meet frats guys and attend their parties. Plus, its a lot cheaper that way.

Above is self promoter for theta or GPHI

Rankings do matter, everything in the world is based on rankings. That's why you chose berkeley over uc Merced for example.

And I know plenty of transfers in the top sororities

^How does that make them a self-promoter for gphi or theta?

To answer OP's question, it's looking like a yes 99% chance of spring rush. But definitely visit each sorority's website and email them about recruitment. They'll be able to help you from there.

I know this is a long shot, but I'm a spring admit and kappa legacy and I really want to do spring rush. I don't know any girls in Kappa at berkeley currently because I'm a spring admit and didn't do fpf, but I would love to be in the house. what should i do

i doubt kappa is gonna do spring cause they prob already filled their quota and didn't do cob this year or last year so you can rush fall but chances are smaller since top houses like to take freshman

If you don't even go to Berkeley yet, don't put all your eggs in the Kappa basket. That being said, email their recruitment chair, and inquire. There are plenty of special rules for legacies. If they invite you over for a COB dinner/small event (hey, you could be the only bid they give out in the spring, just because they can), still go to other houses during spring recruitment to compare. Make sure its your cup of tea. One of the girls in my sorority is a legacy at my house and ADPi. She chose our house instead because because she felt she connected better with the girl at our house who pref'ed her, as opposed to the girl at ADPi. Its not a testament to ADPi having bad girls: not all all. You click with some people, and you don't click with others. That doesn't make them bad people.

Also, just because a house is the "hottest" doesn't mean its the best for every PNM. This is why rankings don't matter when choosing a house... If Berkeley's "Rank" was determined by looks over academics, we'd be bottom of the barrel...

it's obvious you're in a bottom house....
ranks are all about looks no matter how superficial it sounds you're not gonna rank a house by their gpa.

where can i find info about the number of spring bids given out for each house?
what does it mean that chi o only gave three bids out? how many do they have to give and does that mean they're really hard to get into?

By: calbound
by: ThatJan 6, 2013 7:53:49 PM

You have no way of knowing what house has what quota, and how many bids they are giving out. In the fall, each house gets assigned the same number of girls, in the Spring, the number of bids distributed varies on a lot. Each house has a different quota, so just because a house gives out more bids during Spring, or COB, doesn't necessarily mean its a "lower house" (SK is a good example) However, fact is"top" houses do fill up their quota much faster. This is why they traditionally don't do Spring Recruitment.

Things that effect the number of bids: how many girls DA in the the fall, how many Fall grads, how many girls were initiated of the original that got a bid in the fall (some girls quit), if any girls are kicked out (rare), if any girls transfer/take a semester off/go abroad.

Houses know have a rough estimate after Fall initiation how many spaces they have left in order to meet quota. They will then determine there if they need to do Spring Recruitment. If they're above, at, or slightly (1-3) below quota, they won't do Spring recruitment: Its expensive, time consuming, stressful and unnecessary. If the number is small, (between 3-7) then usually a house will do invite only, or COB dinner events. Again, this is cheaper, and more intimate, They don't need to do a lot of publicity, girls will come on their own. If the number is large (8+) they will do a full fledged open recruitment. This is just general guidelines: DG did open recruitment last spring, but gave out around 6

Also, if a house has say 10 bids, but doesn't see 10 girls that fit the quality of their sisterhood, it doesn't have to give out all 10 bids, It can give out 7 or 5, and wait on COB events during the semester to give out the remaining bids. You're not really competing. Vice Versa can apply, if a house plans on giving out 10 bids, but sees 12 girls who could be great attributes to the sisterhood, then it'll give out 12 bids. They have some wiggle room with the numbers, but not TOO much (ie It can't give out 40 bids when they only have room for 10 girls.

What you should take away from this: Be your best self. Don't fake it, and engage in conversation. Dont be shy or quiet, but don't be too loud either. Its girl flirting. As someone who has recruited before, I can tell when someone looks bored, or too nervous, or even when they're faking it. Don't be that person.

Also, as for food, I can only speak for my house: we don't judge you if you want to take the snack/water. We take one if you take one, and we don't take one if you dont take one. That being said, if you take one, its OUR house: Don't be messy/try and eat neatly... Its not asking much! I have no idea if other houses judge you, but you can be assured at least 1 house doesnt. (If it makes a difference?)

Just check out the website and go to the events held. DO NOT rely on information here, sadly. only YOU can make your own opinions and if I was rushing I would rather have a clear slate of each house so i could decide on my own, but now you have a lot of biased opinions in certain ones. I know you want a little backup info first but lets be real the same people post on here all the time and info cannot be reliable. My advice, meet some girls from each chapter and ask them your questions personally.
